I have two problems here, hopefully someone can help. I just bought this car from a dealer 1 month ago.

1) Battery light came on figured best to get a new one & put it in. Then I started up the car and the battery light is still on! Can't figure out why.

2) Then, it's been pretty cold the past couple of days so I heat up the car every morning. Lately I've been noticing the white smoke coming out of the tail pipe smells like something is burning. Noticed the same burning smell when I first turned on the engin after putting in the new battery. In the morning the smell only last a couple minutes then goes away. Should I be worried about that? Especially since the smell also seems to be coming from the engin now? I took a look under the hood & can't see anything fried or burning.

Thanks for the help!

1.) The alternator is probably bad. Take it somewhere like Advance or AutoZone and have the alternator tested.

2.) I'm not so sure on this one. Someone else here may be able to help.

The battery light is actually the alternator to indicate it isn't charging. Since your car is 7 years old it more than likely needed a new battery. Like riccbhard says take the alternator out to be tested. Advance or Autozone or O'Rielly can test it for free. The alternator is a round thing on the right side, top of the engine as you are facing it from the right fender. First check that the drive belt hasn't broken. This would make the charge light come on, too.

The white "smoke" coming out of the tail pipe is just condensation of the exhaust. For every gallon of fuel burned it creates almost a gallon of water.
This is normal.

The smell is just the catalytic converter heating up to operating temperature. That's why you don't smell it when it has heated up. Sometimes they smell like sulphur, too. This is normal.

Not positive but they may check the alternator out withit in the car. (Without removing it). Funny thing the warning light, has a picture of a battery but the light means the alterbator is bad. Go figure. I agree with Davescort97. You're seeing condensation in the morning. There may be a little smell when the engine is cold. It runs a little rich on fuel when it cold. Mine stinks a little the first few minutes. Doesn't sound like anything to worry about. I just made a 1,000 mile trip in my car to a foreighn country, Kalifornia :evillol: Ran great!
