'98 GMC Sierra: Skittish/Erratic Gas GuageColt Hero 12-06-2005, 02:21 PM '98 GMC Sierra, 5.7l Friend's truck. Gas guage is quivering and it's audible at times. Is this a mechanical thing inside the cluster, is it the guage itself (although that would be near the tank, wouldn't it)? jdod85 12-13-2005, 05:42 PM '98 GMC Sierra, 5.7l Friend's truck. Gas guage is quivering and it's audible at times. Is this a mechanical thing inside the cluster, is it the guage itself (although that would be near the tank, wouldn't it)? My 99 did the same thing. Sending unit was bad. Since I had to drop tank, and Murphy law I change pump and sending unit. I got mine from NAPA. If I remember its $200 and change. wafrederick 12-15-2005, 02:43 PM It is the sending unit. You can get just the sending unit from the dealer( about $105.00) instead of replacing the whole thing. My father has done this since the dealership he gets factory GM parts treats him very good. All you to take to the dealer is the vin to get it.Anyway Napa fuel pumps are junk, they are made by Airtex. If it is made by Airtex,100% junk.Carquest changed their fuel pump line to someone else(did away from Airtex). swensonb71 12-15-2005, 03:04 PM It is the sending unit. I got mine from the dealership and is working longer than the one I got from Advanced Auto ( which also carries AC Declo). the easiest way to change it is to remove the d/s bed mounting bolts. then just loosen the p/s bed mounting bolts enough to lift the d/s of the bed to access the top of the tank. that way you dont have to wait til you get low on gas or end up draining the tank just to get access to it. I have put 2 fuel pumps in mine since I have had it (240,000 miles ago) and still tickn'. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
