On the side of my ford escort weber carburetor, there is a barrel shaped object just short of an inch long which looks like it should have a wire leading out of it. What is this and where does the wire connect to? I wonder if it would have anything to do with my car stalling at junctions? I have a G reg 1990 ford escort 1.4 lx. The barrel on the back of the carburetor seems to have a wire on it. Unfortunately I don't have a Haynes manual to refer to but I do have a ford orion manual.

Maybe a solenoid of some kind. I may be wrong but seems some of those carbs had a vent solenoid. Just guessing. A lot of the carbs with wires coming out of them were called 'feedback' carbs. Can't tell you anything about them except they will cost a lot.

pictures would help

is the carb a weber 32/36?

if so, is it stamped on top with DGV, DGEV, or DGAV?

it could be an automatic electric choke. if so, the wire goes to the igniton coil. (negative side i believe)

if there is no manual choke it probably has an electric one.

there is a really good book on webers available

title- weber carburators
author- pat braden
publisher- hpbooks
msrp- $17.95 usd (can probably find it on amazon or overstock.com for less)

hope that helps

thanks, I am trying to sort a picture out for later but its a manual choke and in the orion manual it doesn't actually list what the part is so I agree with you in thinking its a solenoid. have put some redex in the car yesterday but it now seems to be missing a little too. So a lesson learnt there! I usually am okay working on the old fords but this one is proving a little tricky. Will check breather pipes today also. The car is giving off a slightly rubbery smell as I drive along and yesterday I could also smell petrol slightly as I was driving.

The carburetor has a small metal tag attached with this on: 865F FAC0437 UK. It also has two chambers. No points in the car, just cap and rotor arm.
