I have an 83 olds 88 royal with a 307 in it and it is hard to start first thing, no matter what the weather is like. you have to keep gassin it or it will die. also it diesels win you kill it and when it shifts from 2 to 3 it jerks but not from 3 to second or any other time.

I believe you have a carburetor and if your choke pull off is not adjusted correctly or if is not working
the engine will not start and keep running,the other thing to look for is the vacuum hoses being brittle and cracked or missing,one more thing is the heated air going to the air cleaner,your engine is designed to have heated air to it and if the system is not working the engine will want to die when the choke has opened but the engine isn't fully warmed.
As far as the trans,check the modulator and the vacuum hose to it. Good Luck
