When I shift from reverse or neutral to drive, there is a 2-3 second hesitation before drive is engaged. Anyone else have this problem?
Is it "normal"?

I have this problem, but it is whenever I shift into any gear. I don't know if it is a problem, but I"ve had the car for 2 years and I never got it looked at. Nothing has happened as a result of not getting it looked at.

It is usually related to low or worn out fluid. A job best done by VW or someone whoi is familiar with VW transmissions as they use a special fluid & need a scanner to set the level properly.

The dealership told me the factory allows 3 to 5 seconds to pick up drive from park or reverse. They also told me on a 99 beetle gls automatic the transmission is a sealed unit and can't serviced ie. fluid changed.

the programming of the autmoatic transmission is doing that. its normal especially when really cold out. just fluid pumping through the tranny.

you can change the fluid and filter, but you need to use VW fluid only.
