.....
need alot more info than that to give a good answer..
how many miles?
is it turbo?
ios it t top?
is it digital or analog?
electronic adj suspention?
do the windows leak(rear quarter glass)

t tops often leak and the seals are expensive
digital dash has tendency to stop working although this problem can usually be fixed relatively cheaply if you know what your doing
ac units usually need rechargeing every other year
rear window leaks if left unattended lead to holes in floor board that arwe the same place that the rear suspentin links to
this is an interference motor meaning change the timing belt and whebn doing so remeber to first remove rocker shafts(no big deal)
those are basicly it for the cons
as for the prosa the lists goes on and on if its turbo it is one of the simpilist turbo systems ever created meaning that the diy can bolt on parts and no need to reflash until you exceed the realm of normal bolt ons( minor bolt ons)
and as for performance with it being a older car the bolt ons are not very car specific yto these
you have to get universal like a cone filter (near cold are due to design ofd intake put on an exhaust and a boost controller and boost the psi otom say 8 psi and set timing to 22 degrees btd instead of the recomended 20 and you got a nice additioin of power from styock and you should be able to smoke all those gsr and type r blah blah bl;ah hondas

good luck

tell him to get an 87+ turbo; IMO they're the best looking, and they come stock with an LSD... I think they have 5 extra HP too, but I'm not sure on that one (Delerious or LLZ correct me if I'm wrong), but other than that I think pretty much everything's been said...

also check out z31.com you can find out alot there

yeah they come with a different turbo (slightly) which gives them a bit more hp...

as for potential, with the turbo, the sky/your wallet is the limit for performance, just depends what your goals and budget are... as for the n/a, it's not worth getting unless it's a. a super good deal (ie. free or in really really good condition) b. heavily modified already (we're talking higher comp pistons, head work, all that super expensive stuff) or c. you can't afford a turbo which isn't likely as they're dirt cheap almost everywhere you go...

what's he looking at? as in year, miles, turbo/non turbo, 5 spd vs automatic...

make it two steps...

step 1 = taking the time to actually try and decypher it
step 2 = understanding it.

he is looking at the analouge dash, open minded in terms of turbo/NA, auto or man, targa preferbly. that is all that he likes, all else are insegnificate details.

Any other major problems that are assosiated with 300ZX?

thanks heaps to every1 who posted!!!

there will be problems if the previous owner beat the hell outa it and didn't do maintenance...

the one main problem with z31's is the injector recall, but most have already had it done... if he wants performance, than get a turbo, no questions asked... if he wants something nice looking to cruise in that could potentially hold about 3 pasengers... get an n/a 2+2... but the 2 seaters look better

turbo 5 speed is the way to go then, its VERY rare to find a z31 in slicktop (no T-roofs) so he probably won't have to worry about it.. as for problems, there isn't really anything major, just make sure to find out when the timing belt was done, that's prettymuch the biggest maintenance issue you'll find with the 300zx's z31 or z32... they are known for having a few random electrical gremlines, but they can usually be resolved pretty easily..

make sure to look for rust.. EVERYWHERE on the car.... nissan's are Notorious for hiding rust... if it's just surface rust it's no problem, the stuff you'll want to look out for is if it's rusted thru anywhere, especially underneath the car...

either way, good luck, i'm sure your friend will find the zed for him

pre-90's Nissan's are notorious for rust! :D

87+ 2 seater 5-speed turbo. if you have some cash and any luck you may be able to find yourself a 88 Shiro.

no go with an 88 shiro or not, some of the 87 turbo's didn't come with an lsd... the ones made after a cirtain month did but unless you actually get under the car and look there's really no way to tell when test driving the car (depends how hard you test drive:p)

actually, tell him not to get a shiro edition first off... everyone should gain a respect for the Z before they can own a special edition one...

I got fucked up the ass on the LSD man, cuz my car was made in 9/86 .... all the 87's made after like 4/87 have an LSD
