what year X5 4.4 to buy?aaronazevedo 12-02-2005, 06:16 AM All - I'm strongly considering a used X5. I've settled on the 4.4 as I think its the best mix of power, performance, and fuel economy (I know 22mpg highway isn't that great, but its better than the 4.6 or 4.8). My gut says to pay the extra coin for a '04 and get the new x-drive system, the updated 4.4 valve train, and the 6 speed auto. However, the '02 and '03 are getting pretty damn cheap. Main requirment is BMW CPO. Won't buy a car without it. Second requirement is sport package complete with seats, suspention, and steeting wheel. Nav is a nice to have. Any experiences out there? Any one driven '02 or '03 back to back with an '04. Is it worth the money? What is your real world highway fuel economy? Does the 4.4 have enough oumph to get out of it's own way? Love to hear your thoughts. Thanks, X5strap 02-24-2006, 06:16 PM I had the same problem 2 yrs ago. I was looking for a clean late model X5 them I heard about all the changes on the 04 so i ending buying a new one. Really didn't cost that much more and it has the 745 engine, new in 04 I think plus the 6 speed, a total of 120 changes. I got the 4.4 and agree the 4.8 is not worth the difference, if it was an "M" engine maybe. I also got the upgrade package and sport suspension, the only thing I wish i had was NAV, if fact I am trying to add it now. I have been told there is no difference in the 05 and 06's except bluetooth/assist is standard, but I added to 05 bluetooth to my car anyway.
