Engine Problem

On thanksgiving i was driving down the road when knocking noises started coming from the engine. There was no where to pull over so i kept going till i could find somewhere to pull over. About 30 seconds later the engine seized and i coasted the rest of the way down the road. It got towed to the shop the next morning and they promptly informed me that i needed a new engine. The car only has 110,000 miles on it and the only warning that i had of a possilbe problem was a slight knocking i heard one day two weeks ago but it stoped the next day. Does anybody have any ideas what could have done this to my engine?

When I had my prelude, the engine went through a similar situation when the timing belt snapped and all the rods were bent. When do you recall the last time the timing belt was replaced?

Hopefully it was replaced because it is recommend that you replace the timing belt every 60,000 miles.

the shop told you that you needed a new engine? did they tell you what was wrong with the one you had, or did they tell you what happened?

ASK QUESTIONS or you will get screwed.

when was the last time you had an oil change as well? my friend had his oil changed and they left the ring on the filter, all the oil came out and his engine was nearly seized as well

any smoke at all?

I had the timing belt, water pump, tensioner belt, pulleys, and thermostat changed about 7 months ago. There was no smoke and I had the oil changed about a month ago. When the car shutoff though right before the engine seized the oil light did come on. I am also having the shop take the engine apart to figure out what exactly caused this.

problem could be in a faulty install of the parts or a faulty oil change. theres no real way of knowing until the engine gets taken apart.

did you also have the alternator belt and power steering belt changed along with the other things?

No accesory belt would have any impact on an engine siezing up like that. Faulty oil change maybe, but hopefully if your car dumped 5 quarts of oil you would notice it when you left the driveway in the morning. Were you the first person to own the car? If not, the other person might have beat the car to shit and then sold it before this happened because they knew it was innevitable. If that is the case i appologize for all the assholes in the world.

there was a guy on club3g that had his powersteering belt break and hit his timing belt. it knocked the pulley almost off.

Well I guess in that case it would. I was assuming that you meant the belt alone could have caused the problem, i was not thinking that it would hit a more important component.

Does anybody know how much a engine plus labor would cost?

Have seen gt motors go on ebay for around $600 before Shipping and handling. Not sure about installation. Buddy of mine has a Celica GTS and he blew his motor and he had to replace it. It ran him around $4300 for a rebuilt motor and to have it installed. I know it's not an Eclipse but that may give you an Ideal

well that was getting it rebuilt. id say it would run you about $2000-$2500 total.

No he bought one that was already rebuilt he didn't have his rebuilt. Small town in West Virginia and the person that owns the Toyota Dealership owns pretty much every dealership in the area and there are no private shops in the area that will touch imports. I otherwords they have open range to charge people out the ass for anything they do.

if you can find a small performance shop they are sometimes cheaper, engine's aren't expensive, shipping may be, and my friend's performance shop will swap engine's for 600$ or so

Trying to get him to move out here. That is why I live in Boise now and not there. The town is dead. If it wasn't for the fact that I moved to Idaho the day after I bought my Eclipse I would have never had to bought it. When I had my 3000GT there before I totalled it I had to take it to the closest Mitsu Dealership to have anything done to it and that was an hour an a half away. When I was having issues with it blowing fuses because of a broken motor mount I had to have it towed to the dealership 3 times in 2 weeks before they discovered the problem, talk about expenisive.

Engine was leaning back pinching a wire (I think it was the ignition wire) anyway it would keep blowing a fuze for the motor. It sounded odd to me as well but after they replaced the motor mount it never happened

tahts plain goofy, people always look at me funny when i say i replaced my motor mounts... "you broke those ALREADY?!!?" nah, but i thought i should get a head start

i guess that's just one of those answers that you almost can't figure out for yourself, pinching the wire and all
