The old torque converter lock & unlock storyk4rbm 11-26-2005, 09:51 AM Back in August I had this same problem. It is the tps or apps which ever you want to call it. I learned, on this forum, to disconnect the batteries, turn on the ignition switch and let it set for 24 hours. Worked great until now. Has anyone gotten a "REAL" answer from a dealer other than "Lets change the Tranny", and it still does the same thing. I get several stories on the cost of this TPS and where it is located. I will try the battery trick before I spend much money again. 99 auto 2500 cummins. Thanks MT-2500 11-26-2005, 11:14 AM Unhooking the battery is not going to fix it. What codes is it setting? What trans do you have? What mileage and service history? What is it doing or not doing? MT bigdodgedon 12-02-2005, 07:48 PM My 99 2500 Ram with 5.9 gas had the same problem with the torque converter unlocking & locking in OD. I noted about a 200 RPM variation more noticed while in cruise. I replaced the Throttle Position Sensor (left side under air cleaner) & cured the problem. Took 10 minutes & part cost $92. k4rbm 12-03-2005, 11:10 AM My 99 2500 Ram with 5.9 gas had the same problem with the torque converter unlocking & locking in OD. I have read that before. About 7 months ago that seemed to be the prevailling fix. I talked to Dave McBride on the "Sam & Dave" show and he doesn't feel that it is the problem but I have read too many reports otherwise. The fix I tried was cheap and it lasted for 7 months. I just now removed the battery cables and shorted them together for 30 minutes with the key on. I realize it probably won't fix the problem but it knowledge for my file. See I am a retired A.T.T. tech support person and electronic guru and I need facts. I have the mystery switch in my truck so I can lock up my torque converter at will so I know it is electronic. It will be interesting to see if I get another 7 months with this fix. Why???? A bad part is a bad part but this appears to processor related some how. Stay tuned. Ron MT-2500 12-03-2005, 12:20 PM You need to get it on a good trans capable scanner and see what is going on. There is a ton of info in a good scanner. Also check with dealer. Have him run your vin and see if there is any tsb or updates for your PCM. A lot of times a pcm flash will cure some problems. Go easy on the battery disconnect. It will clear pcm memory but will not clear codes. The pcm have a KAM in them that can only be cleared with a scanner. Codes have to be cleared with a scanner. When you disconnect a battery always remove neg cable first and hook it back up last or you run the risk of spiking the pcm. How every a battery disconnect or pcm unplug does cure some problems sometimes. Kinda like when windows lock up on a pc and you have to reboot it. I am no expert car guy but have done my own work for sometime. Me and dealers have a problem. The last "Crysler/Dodge" dealer that I asked to do a tsb told me that they didn't do that. I had to go to another dealer to have the pcm reflashed. It was the one to change the shift points and there was no charge. I do belive it is in the pcm but not sure why. It sets no codes and I properly maintain my truck. Been working with batteries, big batteries for a long time so know to be careful. I would love to find some software for a laptop to do the same thing a scanner does. I can't see buying a high dollar scanner when all you need is the connector and software. I know how to get the basic codes without one but not the good stuff. Thanks again. This problem has been batted around the net for some time now and I can't believe someone namely dodge has not addressed it. MT-2500 12-03-2005, 02:56 PM Check out this link they may have someting you are looking for. That lap top stuff is getting better all of the time. Good Luck MT http://tools.batauto.com/ Thanks for the info. I haven't checked the TSB list in a while but did today. Don't know how I or everyone else missed this one but there it is discribing the symptom exactly but the year window appears to be kinda narrow. TSB 18-02-99. Why is so hard for Dealers or stealers to look up. Read the one about no overdrive. " Lets put in a new tranny", gee its doing the same thing. You read this over and over. Of course in this tsb they refer to the Mopar MDS2 diagnostic machine that only they have. Ron MT-2500 12-04-2005, 10:44 AM TSB 18-02-99 Could be a cure to some of the problems. Yes it is a dealer deal on the reflashing. Even if you have Mopar tester you have have to have access to the reflash. Good Luck MT vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
