Torque Converter

My check engine light came on yesterday, so I stopped by Autozone for a diagnosis. The code I got was 1744 / Torque converter clutch system performance. Can anyone give me any insight on it? The car seems to be running fine, so I baffled. I really don't need any unecessary car repair, I just put a rebuilt engine in the car four months ago. Is it still ok to drive? Thanks,

It's a Ford Escort SE (1999)

The torque convertor has a certain about of slip in it. That's why you don't need a clutch pedal at stops. To save gas they put a torque converter 'lock' on many transmissions. At high speed/low torque demand the torque covertor locks up to eliminate slippage. This drops RMP and saves gas. You can test this pretty easy. Count the shifts. You should feel it shift to 2nd, 3rd, 4th and then lockup (which feels like a shift). So this could be the problem. (Assuming Escort has this type of automatic transmission). It's always possible that the warning light is full of shit too! Maybe there's nothing wrong. Anyway, I'd take her out and count how many shifts your getting.

Thanks, I have listen to it shift and it seems to be working fine. I have counted it and it seem to lock after the 4th shift. Do you know if Escort tend to have this problem? I really don't want to invest anymore money in the car, not until the new year at least. You have been the first person to give me hope! I appreciate any other insight.

If it runs OK then I'd just keep driving it. Since it is a 4 speed there will be total of 5 speeds when you add in the convertor lock.

I'm assuming you've checked the tranny fluid?
