Black smoke from tailpipesRKLamb 11-21-2005, 12:49 PM Well the other day I ran out of gas. I did manage to get to station before it was too late. But since then my car has been driving like it is bogged down. You can rev up on the engine all day, but as soon as you start rolling its like the engine is not reponding to the gas. Then sometime it seems as if it is clearing up and you are about to floor it and all in a sudden it does it again. I went to the Nissan dealership today and they refuse to even work on it giving me some crap about having aftermarket parts on the car. I replaced the fuel filter loaded it with cleaner and had the gas pressure checked and stll no results. They claim that the car is running too rich, meanwhile Nissan who did nothing says I have 2 bad turbos, but before I ran out of gas they were fine.. The mechanics I spoke with today think it is a sensor or regulator. He claims it not the fuel pump or the injectors. but whatever it is the car seems be running rich with bad acceleration, rough idling, no horsepower. At this point what do you guys think it could be. xXxRocker5150 11-21-2005, 03:36 PM bad 02 sensor????? IDK man I mean the o2 sensor would net you bad gas mileage... maybe it's a bad ECU or MAF... I really don't know man, sorry I can't be of more help DeleriousZ 11-21-2005, 08:04 PM try resetting the ecu... (warm the car up, shut it off, take off the negative terminal of the battery for 10 or 15 minutes, restart the car and let it run for another few minutes) but depending on your mileage your 02 sensors probably need to be replaced... the black smoke is a definite signal that you're running way too rich.. sounds like the guys at nissan are pretty shady, i wouldn't go to them again if i were you.. MikeMan 11-22-2005, 05:28 AM It could be any fuel system component not flowing enough petrol due to getting clogged. Try replacing the fuel dampener and the FPR before doing anything else. These things you can do yourself without having to pay the mechanic $800. They're both right on top of the engine. Thankfully they're both quite cheap from nissan. If this doesn't fix it, you can see if an injector isn't working by going through and trying each cylinder without ignition. That is to say, start with cylinder 1, remove the spark plug lead (while the engine is running, be careful not to zap yourself) and see if the engine runs any worse. If it does, put the lead back and move to cylinder 2. do this for all cylinders. If you find a cylinder where removing the ignition doesn't make it run any worse, then it means that that cylinder wasn't firing to begin with, which means you've got a bad injector. This works becayuse injectors either flow or they don't. I've never ever seen an injector that half flows due to a clog, simply because the hole is so tiny that any piece of grit thats going to clog it is going to clog it completely. If you find that all your injectors seem ok, it could possibly be your fuel pump. it could be that you're just not getting enough pressure to the fuelling system. Try pinching the fuel return line with some pliers (with cloth underneath to prevent damaging the hose) and see if the car runs any worse. If the engine runs worse, it means that your fpr is regulating the fuel properly and pinching the return is making the fuelling system rich. If pinching it doesn't do anything it means that your FPR isn't actually operating at the necessary pressure needed for the injectors to function properly. This could be a result of the fuel pump not pumping as well as it could (perhaps due to being clogged). If you find that your fuel pump is ok, your injectors are ok and your FPR and fuel dampener are all aok, then check each spark plug. You would have run lean for a while there as you were running out of fuel which would have damaged the spark plugs by overheating or corroding the tips. take each one out in turn and check that its actually sparking and its gapped to the right clearance. If the spark plug isn't gapped or its corroded or something, this will cause you to run rich. If they're all working ok then take it to the mechanic as I'm all out of ideas. :D A list of things that would cause the problem but wouldn't have been affected substantially by you running out of fuel: O2 sensor external ignition system components (coils etc.) MAF turbos cat Let me know how you go! -Mike vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
