What weight do you use

The manual says to use 5W30 oil but that was superceded by a tech bulletin that says to use 5W20. At Wal-Mart I've only seen 5W20 available in Motorcraft brand. About all I've ever used is 5W30 Tech oil. That's Wal-Mart's brand but it's made by Conoco. As long as the bottle of oil has the API "SM" rating then you are safe. It's the latest and greatest. Don't pay extra for a fancy bottle! IF money was no object then I'd get a full-synthetic oil. I think you can get it in 0W50 or something like that.

I personally like Mobil-1 but any full synthetic would be a good choice. I think it’s worth the extra cash, & you can go longer between oil changes. But then again lots of people have lots of opinions about this. 5W-30 or 0W-30 will be just fine if you can’t find 5W-20.

I agree. 0W30 would be best. It's all about getting oil up to the overhead cam as soon as possible when it's cold.

I like to use the thickest oil in anything and everything that I can get away with. Barring of course oil starvation.
A good 10/30 is fine for just about any engine..down to any temperature.A 15 is pushing it. 20? nope.20 is too thick. Not just for oil circulation but for seals and high cold oil pressure.
As for the mfr's(a lot of them not just Ford.) They go for the thinner oil(in all temperatures) for fuel mileage only. This is even mentioned in more than a few owners manuals.
I used to run the 5w..but even in very cold weather when an engine(especially a sewing machine engine like an Escort) is working hard against high winds/snow..I didn't like the feel(rubbed on fingers) or look of the oil a few times when I checked it when hot.Tried a few brands.Same.Never had any problems.Doesn't burn or leak any.
Figgered I'ld try a 10 and see how it sounded in the cold.Sounded the same on cold start as a 5 so I started using 10 year round.Ended up switching to Penzoil 'cause it was on sale.Sounded better overall.Felt and looked WAAY better when checked hot.SOooo..that's where I stayed.Change oil and filter every 5,000..
I start my car every day in the winter in temperatures from about 25 to 10 . Often from 10 to 0.Sounds just fine from oil circulation on cold startup on 10/30.

I run Quaker Advanced Engine Full Synthetic 10W30 in my 99LX with 165,000 miles. It loves that stuff.

If your car has that high of mileage, don't run synthetic, you'll be giving your engine a good cleaning, and possibly making the seals leak. I don't recommend 5w-20, either....it pumps up fine when cold, but the 20 is too low, and won't protect the bearings enough. Go with 5w-30 for cold weather, and if days get above 100F, switch to 10w-40. Also, the first number is the "weight" of the oil when cold, and the second number is what the "weight" changes to when hot. I run 0w-40 in my 1st gen. It pumps up to 60 psi as soon as the engine starts running. Hasn't affected my gas mileage, either, since I'm pulling 42+ mpg. As for brand, I would suggest Motorcraft....a good all around oil. Or, go with Valvoline high mileage, good amount of moly in it. Havoline has even more in it, and seems to hold well. Mobile clean 5000 is also a good choice. Tons of choices, and I'm talking too long.

My car gets SeaFoamed every other month. If the oil isn't cleaning it out, the SeaFoam is. I also add diesel fuel every 3-4tanks of gas to keep my injectors up to par.

If I've got deposits holding my seals, then them are some mean sons of bitches.

Oh yeah, my compression is at ~175ish psi per cylinder.
