The plug on the tranny pan is the level check, undo it and if nothing comes out you need to add fluid.
BUT
It must be checked at 95 - 113 degrees F
and the car must be level.
Make sure you select all gears while the car is warming up
to circulate the fluid.
There is a fill plug with a cover up near the one of the air conditioner lines
which you can see from underneath the car on the transaxle.
I added fluid (special VW type) by undoing the banjo bolt on the tranny cooler and adding fluid thru the hole the bolt came from
(be careful of the o-rings) and also be carefull not to contaminate the fluid with Pentosin (red) anti-freeze.
The manual recommends new seals for the level check plug as well
I re-used mine (no leaks)
Not an easy process and I recommend you find a manual with pictures.
unless you like doing this :banghead:
The manual recommends a cooking or darkroom thermometer
inserted in the level check hole.
