power steeringscott37 11-11-2005, 10:35 PM I am pretty sure I have a leak in the power steering pump. The other day I was under the car and I saw a lot of what I thought was oil but my brother tells me it is coming from the pump. I checked the fluid level and it is fine. Also level for oil and fin too. I just dont know why THERE IS SO MUCH FLUID ON ALL OF THE LINES UNDER THERE. pLEASE HELP THANKZ. 1984 300zx nt 5 speed. 1viadrft 11-11-2005, 10:48 PM Best bet is to de-grease and power wash your engine bay and under-carriage.... that may help you determine better where the leak is coming from. Also it may be a slow leak so keep watching oil levels. What kinda oil is it BTW? Did you recently top off any of your fluids? scott37 11-11-2005, 11:36 PM Best bet is to de-grease and power wash your engine bay and under-carriage.... that may help you determine better where the leak is coming from. I degreased it yesterday oh by the way I covered distributor and all elect-connectors I could find and when I was done I rinced it went to start it up and it would not. So I sat there for an hour and a half before it finally did. I hope I did not screw anything up real bad. Also yes I topped off all fluid levels about a week ago and as far as the oil it is mobil semi-synthetic 40 wgt 1viadrft 11-11-2005, 11:41 PM TIP: When spraying water into your engine bay cover all and everything that involves electronics! Unplug the battery for good measure! Once you rinse... let the engine air-dry before re-connecting the battery and starting. You should be okay though... sounds like you may have wet the alternator a little... As far as oil... what kind of oil seems to be leaking? PS fluid for sure? Also you may have over-filled the PS fluid and if you did this tends to puge while you are driving around town. Just keep an eye out for fluid levels. DeleriousZ 11-11-2005, 11:50 PM electronics aren't harmed by water, they're harmed by the electricity flowing through the water making it short out to other wires... unplug your battery so there is no current and spray anything you want to scott37 11-12-2005, 12:44 AM TIP: When spraying water into your engine bay cover all and everything that involves electronics! Also now that I think about it I MIGHT HAVE OVER FILLED THE OIL BY ABOUT A HALF A QUART OR SO MABYE A LITTLE MORE. If the battery is dissconnected should I still cover the distributor or just let it air dry before I start it up? DeleriousZ 11-12-2005, 01:38 AM covering the distributor might be a good idea because it will rust up if you let moisture sit in there... my 88 had that.... replaced the cap and rotor for like $15.. xXxRocker5150 11-12-2005, 11:20 AM correct me if I'm wrong guys; when you fill up the oil to the correct point, it lubricates the crank every time the crank turns one revolution; when you overfill it, the crank starts splashing and smacking into it?? DeleriousZ 11-13-2005, 12:30 AM yeah it starts frothing up the oil and splashing it everywhere... just not a good situation.. longlivetheZ 11-13-2005, 04:20 PM Overfilling the oil will cause parasitic loss due to the crank fighting to turn in the oil, it can blow your head gasket cuz there's too much oil pressure (should be between 40 and 60 psi at 2K rpm), could just blow out your exhaust...don't over fill it. The VG30E(T) holds 4.25 qts. Does your engine make groaning noises when you turn the wheel all the way one way or the other? DeleriousZ 11-13-2005, 04:29 PM mine does... i just hope the ps pump holds out for the winter.. there's 1 or 2 bolts on there that are a BITCH to get at... longlivetheZ 11-13-2005, 07:08 PM Keep the fluid topped off and it won't make any noise. All you have to beware of is where the fluid is going. My 86T started smoking one day and I thought I had blown the head gasket or something...but it didn't smell like oil and it wasn't low on oil. Come to find out, I had blown a high pressure power steering line. I thought "oh...ok...who cares...I'll just keep it topped off and it won't matter...I can deal with the smoke." Wrong...power steering fluid sprayed all over the place...including all over the alternator. Result: dead alternator. Keep it full and keep an eye on where the fluid is going and you should be alright. DeleriousZ 11-13-2005, 08:06 PM yeah i checked all my fluids yesterday, coolant was a little low, but i'll address that if it keeps getting low... the ps is full but the pump still makes a nice whiiirrringg/whining noise when it's cold out.. yeah i'm glad i haven't had any major leaks anywhere on my z's yet... replacing hoses and such sucks.. when i split my throttle body coolant hose it took me 2 solid hours to replace this goddamn 5" piece of tubing.. had to bring out some surgical tools (no joke) to finally get it installed... definitely don't want to go through all that again! longlivetheZ 11-14-2005, 05:31 PM Yea...try replacing the coolant bypass hose. All of 4". Took it off in 30 seconds. Could NOT get it back on. Just cuz of a little pin hole. Major pain in the nut sack. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
