It saves your turbo from killing itself. People say you don't need them with an atx tranny, but I disagree, choice is yours. I would use and have used them.

Can you have a blowoff valve with out a turbo.You already do in a way...Your PCV valve is sometime referred to as the blow-by valve because the PCV system scavenges the gases that "blow by" the piston rings and end up in the crankcase.

In all seriousness though, why would you want a BOV w/o a turbo?

A blow off valve's function it to "blow off" exessive intake manifold pressure caused by letting off the throttle when the turbo is spinning and providing boost. By blowing off the boost the turbo can remain spinning at high speed while you switch gears. Without one the waste gate has to open and the turbine speed is slowed down in order not to overboost your intake. If you open the gate and slow down the turbo, you will experience a lag when you hit the next gear and punch the throttle. If you have an automatic, a blow off valve isn't as important. If you have no turbo, you have no boost to "blow off". A blow off valve would be useless.
