top speed of the z32 (90-96) twin turbo is up around 185 mph (gearing wise, removing speed limiter requires a computer mod)

maximum hp is usually around 800rwhp.. i've seen people do more but the engines don't last long when making that much power... realistically you're probably looking at between 500-650 rwhp, 650 being pretty lofty, require i complete rebuild of everything prettymuch...

these cars take very well to mods (as shown by the ~100 bhp gain from intake exhaust and ecu) but the mods are a bit more expensive than your normal car in some areas... it just depends how much hp you're realistically shooting at...

top speed gearing wise is closer to 200mph than that i think, isnt it DZ? i thought it was like 195 or so...

anyways, 90-96 Twin Turbo is the best for quick HP but it is the heaviest of all the Z's. for $10k you could possibly pick up an older 240Z and swap in a high HP motor and have a beast. but it will be hard pressed to find a 240Z that is in good enough shape to be raced beings they are early 70's cars.

anyways, finding a nice Twin Turbo will usually cost you over $10k but deals can be found if you look hard enough. if you could pick one up for $7-8k and sink the rest of the money into performance mods you could easily have a 350rwhp (425hp) 300zx. the good thing about the 90-96 Z is that is a very good platform to start with because the suspension is par none, chassis is stiff enough for anything, stock VSLD, stock 300hp, stock 8.5" wheels. very good starting platform for quick performance.

6-2 should fit in the 240. 240s in my area are going for around $2500, leaving quite a bit of money for upgrading. Realistically if you are scraping to get $10,000 to buy and upgrade a car then the Twin Turbo isn't really the best choice. You'll be lucky to get a good condition Z32 at that price, much less spend money on upgrades. Be careful with a low priced Z that has "one or two maintence issues", you could be digging a hole you won't have the money to get out of. That does not mean to stop looking for a bargain on a good condition Z though, they are out there. If you can get a good condition body with a blown motor, a replacement motor can be had for under $2000.

As for the 240, if you can find one in decent condition with a good engine, try putting together a turbo kit for the stock KA motor. The guys at www.phatka-t.com have gotten upwards of 600rwhp from their bigger builds and average around 250-300rwhp with basic stuff. They have ready made exhaust manifolds for GT25 and 28 turbos that can be found just about anywhere. A KA turbo kit can be put together for under $2000 and considering a SR20 in unknown condition will run upwards of $2500 the KA-T is a pretty good deal. Some money on coilovers, Z32 front calipers/rotors, clutch upgrade, LSD rear dif, etc and so on.

If you are looking for a fairly quick daily driver then the turbocharged 240 might be a better option. If you are going for serious performance then the Twin Turbo is a much better place to start.

i was talking about a 240Z not a 240SX but the latter would work too, i just dont care for it so i never remember it. :dunno:
