Car not starting, HLP PLZ

Hey, i just bought a 1993 ford probe from a friend for cheap and its doesnt start of course. But when I tried to crank it, the battery meter goes to low, and it just make a click sound, then you hear a whinning, and finaly you see smoke if you hold the key to turn it. It doesnt even crank, a friend of mine told me it was the starter, could that be it?

is it a base/se or a gt? i'd check for malf codes, because all you need is a papper clip for that. if you have a gt, here is a good wright up on how to check for codes, if it's teh se/base, im sure there are other wrightups, just do a quick search in google.
