Is it worth switching to a vert auto tranny?

Hello everyone. Through my reading here I found out that the convertable metros had a 4.39 (I think) final drive ratio. Now I'm not claiming to know what that means, I'm just trying to setup a commuter car to get the best possible mileage out of an automagic. Right now I'm hovering at 39.8mpg and was wondering if switching to the vert tranny would hurt or help. I'm not sure what the ratio is now....for that matter, I dont even know enough to know if it would be worth it.

That is why I need some help.
TIA,
Jeff

4.39 will get worse mileage but have better power. higher the number is more the engine turns over to move tire 1 revolution. if you can stand the loss of power put 13" wheels on the car or swap to a 5 speed

How hard is it to switch to a 5 speed? Ballpark figure, how much would that cost? It seems like there would be alot of small things to get lost in. That would be a GREAT DIY writeup! Is there one?

What year is your metro. I have a convertable with a automatic and the MPG sucks. I only get between 20-25 mpg. Something must be wrong with mine.
