Check these guys out at BMWe34.net (http://www.bmwe34.net/e34main/upgrade/wheels_upgrade.htm) with info that will help help you out. I'm running 17 inch BMW style 32 staggered wheels with 235/45/17 front and 255/40/17 rear with no clearance problems. BMW makes a lot of wheels that fit the e34, and they are better made and lighter than most aftermarket wheels. Here's a link to lots of pictures (http://www.bimmer.info/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=41) of e34's posted by their proud owners. Great shots to give you some great ideas.

I have an 89 535i and just got an 18 inch VOXX set. They run real, real smooth. I like them a lot, haven't had any problems with them at all...
