transmision trouble

i have a 2000 neon with a automatic transmision when u put it in reverse it acts like it is in 1st and rev and wont move. when u put it in neutral it is in 1st drive works fine. would like to know if anyone has a idea what the problem is

I had the same problem with my 2000. The transmission fluid was fine and not burnt, and never had any other problems. Just decided to do that one day the exact same thing yours is doing.
What I did was turn the key on without starting it put it in reverse and had someone push it backwards, then in neutral and push it some more.
Then I put it in park and rocked the car back and forth. I know this sounds weird but I was just trying to get an idea of weather the car would roll in neutral and reaverse. Funny thing is, after I did this I started the car and everything worked just fine, and I can't find anyone who has an answer for that. Just one of those weird things. Good Luck!
