Exhaust guy's pissing me offclayton04chevy 10-26-2005, 04:46 PM I just talked to him on the phone to get an estimate on how much it would cost to get long tube headers on my truck and he said that I shouldn't get longtubes because I'd have to change a bunch of stuff. And to add to that, HE SAID GET SHORTIES! I told him many of the people i've talked to said they do nothing. He said I'd have to remove the cats and blah blah blah. I told him I've seen o2 simulators for my truck, and he said he's never heard of them. So should I just pass up the headers and get my Nelson? bigbadram51 10-26-2005, 04:55 PM Well if it were me. I would get the Nelson first. At least that way you will get some added performance now, while you research more into the exhaust. Then when you get some more scratch get the headers, new exhaust, then call up Allen let him know what you changed and he will send you out a newly programmed PCM with the updates. And if im not mistaken Allen can turn off the O2 sensors if need be. jeverett 10-26-2005, 07:16 PM He can. He will turn off the rear o2 sensors like he did mine. My cats are gone and my truck runs fine. Shorties help the top end, while long tube headers help low end torque. I know there are 02 simulators for your truck. If I were you, I'd find another exhaust guy, as this guy sounds like a hack. Get the long tubes AND the nelson tune, and you'll gain the benefits of both. :2cents: jethro_3 10-26-2005, 09:25 PM Shorties help the top end, while long tube headers help low end torque. Mid 14's with only a tune..... :bananasmi LongIslander26 10-26-2005, 09:36 PM :iamwithst There is nothing like a Nelson tune.... Mid 14's with only a tune..... :bananasmi That may be all well and good, but if you don't help the engine take advantage of the new tune with a a good intake setup and exhaust,(Maybe a bigger MAF as well) the engine is only being put under more stress, and you're just asking for problems. You can't just put that kind of a performance tune on a stock motor, and nothing else, and not expect problems later on. Just ask any of the guys who "Chipped" their diesels, but didn't spend the extra money for the rest of the stuff they should've had to make it work right. Blown turbos and thrown rods aren't cheap to fix. :nono: jethro_3 10-26-2005, 09:43 PM Please tell me that these factory engines need a new MAF and I will tell you bull____. You can stuff a lot more air in before you nee a new top end. These engines can eat more air before they need to get it out. Each to his own but please tell the truth. So you want to tell me that a tune with factory parts need more parts to take advantage of what you have?????? :icon16: :sly: :grinno: :screwy: clayton04chevy 10-26-2005, 10:10 PM Will it make a difference if I get fans before or after the tune? Am I LYING? "(Maybe a bigger MAF as well)" I think you need to read alittle more carefully. What good is a "Nelson Tune" with the restrictive stock airbox and exhaust on it? The word MAYBE was there in the thread concerning the MAF. But if you want to get the most out of the tune, you need to get the air in, and then let it get out. SO, you're saying that if I had 2 identical trucks, put the same "Nelson TUne" in each one, but one had headers and an intake (And MAYBE a MAF) an the other didn't, they would both run the same 1/4 mile times, and one wouldn't be faster than the other? I've only been a mechanic for 20+ years, and worked at 2 dealerships, I see this stuff everyday. But what do I know? So, what was it you were trying to say? :loser: :uhoh: :headshake LongIslander26 10-26-2005, 10:23 PM Will it make a difference if I get fans before or after the tune? Noticed a bit more "Seat of the Pants" feel from a dead stop. The Flowmaster exhaust is next, with a set of Dynatech headers. Some nicer rims with some all terrains are on the list too. I'll wait until my warranty is up, or almost up, before I start messing with the PCM tuning. :grinyes: :naughty: jethro_3 10-27-2005, 05:31 AM Allen can set the pin to turn the fans on when you purchase the tune. It will not hurt anything and will be availible when you get the fans plugged in. LongIslander..... So you've done this longer than the hills are????? If you know all and have all the answers please lead your own forum. As far as the MAF goes these things go well into FI before they need a new, upsized, better MAF. All trucks and cars will run better with new performance parts. A tune is a great start to take advantage of what you have. You do not need to buy new parts to get a return on a good tune. If someone does a tune for MPG you don't need to add aftermarket anything to make your existing engine to gain mpg from it's current potential. Please come over to my house and school me just because someone said your certified. The statement is a tune will make what you have run better. Done! Flatrater 10-27-2005, 06:31 AM Quit the remarks jethro_3 (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/member.php?u=303278) just because someone offers another mod to improve the performaance doesn't mean he is wrong because you disagree with him. Nigel215 10-27-2005, 08:13 AM LongIslander26... Just pick up a pair of LT's and an aftermarket Y pipe. You can get a set up with cats like the Dynatech Supermax, or a pait without cats like the Pacesetters (alot cheaper). You could just get the 02 defoulers to get around that for like $2 a piece until you have money for the tune. Just do some research, find the right stuff, and do it yourself! save yourself some $$$. Nigel215 10-27-2005, 08:14 AM oh, FYI. your sig dosent say if you have a 4x4 or not, but some LT's wont fit if you do. jeverett 10-27-2005, 09:47 AM Damn jethro. Someone ratted you out! I will say that I agree with both of you. If you get a tune and nothing else, the truck will for surely perform better than stock, with no other mods. But then if you add intake, exhaust, and so forth and so on, of course the truck will then perform better than it would stock, or with just a tune. I have been told by many other ASE mechanics and VERY knowledgeable people that ths stock MAF is good up to 500hp. Personally I wouldn't waste the money for an aftermarket one unless I had forced induction of some kind. There my :2cents:. Im hardheaded so there's no use arguing with me unless I can see proof. jveik 10-27-2005, 10:05 AM speaking of exhaust... i have heard that sometimes if you dont have enuf backpressure it will burn up your valves. i really dont believe this, but im no mechanic, so do any of you more experienced guys know this is fake or true? tons say it is and tons say it isnt and i dont know who to believe lol LongIslander26 10-27-2005, 10:22 AM Allen can set the pin to turn the fans on when you purchase the tune. What part of "MAYBE a MAF" are you not understanding? "Maybe" implies that you "May" or "May NOT" need one. That was my statement, and any first year lube rack newbie knows that a tune PLUS parts will give you more performance than just a tune alone. It also wasn't "Somebody" who said I was certified, it was ASE, a Nationally recognized organization for technician certification. Get over it and move on already. Done. :loser: BlenderWizard 10-27-2005, 10:26 AM LongIslander26 10-27-2005, 10:27 AM speaking of exhaust... i have heard that sometimes if you dont have enuf backpressure it will burn up your valves. i really dont believe this, but im no mechanic, so do any of you more experienced guys know this is fake or true? tons say it is and tons say it isnt and i dont know who to believe lol Normally if the EGR system remains functioning (As in you don't disable it) that will help to not allow burnt valves to happen. 98vert6spd 10-27-2005, 10:27 AM Shorties help the top end, while long tube headers help low end torque.
