engine code

My friend's 96 Explorer is throwing the engine light. Is there a way I can find out what the code is? I know for my car, there is a process you can do by tapping the gas pedal in a certain pattern. Then the engine light will flash, which tells you which code it's throwing. Is there anything like this for the Explorer? Thanks guys, I appreciate the help!!
