In Progress: DC2 Type-R w/ Turbo K20 swapblueboost 10-23-2005, 01:22 PM Since hearing there was a whole 1:25 K20 engine available, I've been itching to swap one. The plans on this project are to take a revell DC2 type-R, and swap in the Revell super street RSX K20 drivetrain, and turbocharge it. Here are the kits needed for this build http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/Blueboost/DSCF0062.jpg the beginning- http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/Blueboost/DSCF0064.jpg The goal is to put this- http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/Blueboost/fa4234bfd7c22100d128b6a5a5ef998c-68.jpg into this- http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/Blueboost/1997_Acura_Integra_Type_R.jpg Wish it could be a SR20DET going into a curbside S14. Maybe one day. If you see the thread bump to the top, check for the updates if your interested. mugenhb 10-23-2005, 02:38 PM looks like a cool project I've been wanting to do this swap into a civic EG6 SupaMan89T 10-23-2005, 02:49 PM i have a friend davon with a turbo rsx if you need detail pics lemmie know and ill try to get in touch with him and take some! :) 675datsun 10-23-2005, 03:57 PM Alright it's about time! You'll be the first here? I never understood why one would take a Type-R(B-series) engine out and replace it with a K20R...but here's a pic of one at a local show: http://community.webshots.com/photo/258267608/258299654pJRsWj Look forward to the progress! nitro8king 10-23-2005, 06:22 PM i had a kit like that but i change eveything willimo 10-23-2005, 06:31 PM Great! This will be a blast to watch. I also wanted to swap it, probably into an EG but I might do better to stick with another Revell kit for scale's sake. I can't wait to see what you do here. I never understood why one would take a Type-R(B-series) engine out and replace it with a K20R. K is the new B. There are a lot of funny things about the K20's, but they're growing a pretty strong following and show as much potential as the Bs did but with even more to start with. Trick things like i-Vtec and the fact that the intake is in the front and the exhaust in the back make it an obvious move forward from the B series, and they're not much bigger of heavier. Plus, they react better to the popular turbocharging. blueboost 10-23-2005, 06:33 PM Supaman- I think I have pretty good reference material to work with, but if he has anything already up and hosted i'd love to see it. thanks man. I never understood why one would take a Type-R(B-series) engine out and replace it with a K20R well, you just keep your hands covering that can of worms you opened. :lol2: I haven't seen a white US market front with the swap in person, pics (until just now), or done as a model on the board, in any color. Thanks for the inspiration 675datsun. :iceslolan http://image32.webshots.com/33/9/96/54/258299654pJRsWj_ph.jpg : 675datsun 10-23-2005, 07:36 PM Supaman- I think I have pretty good reference material to work with, but if he has anything already up and hosted i'd love to see it. thanks man. well, you just keep your hands covering that can of worms you opened. :lol2: I haven't seen a white US market front with the swap in person, pics (until just now), or done as a model on the board, in any color. I think the K-series engines are the bomb but what I didn't get is why this particular person would take a REAL ITR and swap out the original engine(no slouch) for a K20, isn't that sacrilige amongst the Honda crowd?. A K20 in a stock EG or something else would make sense...end rant! rx7king 10-24-2005, 12:56 PM sweet project, looking forward to seeing how it will turn out AstroRide44 10-24-2005, 01:23 PM Plus, they react better to the popular turbocharging. I think you are wrong on this one. They have 11.5:1 compression ratio which is not turbo friendly at all. you would be better off spraying that motor then using a turbo on stock internals. rsxse240 10-24-2005, 01:43 PM Wish it could be a SR20DET going into a curbside S14. Maybe one day. I am still working on that, sorry for the delays, but that's life...sorry that's death..in the family :( this teggie is gonn a be sweet though. I wish I were into hondas a bit more, but I like my nissans. ImolaEK 10-24-2005, 04:34 PM Awesome:) Very nice. I'm still putting pieces together to build my k20 Civic Hatchback (EK). It would be awesome to see how yours turns out:) Mine will be done NA though with a little twist;) Keep up the awesomenesss. chyknees 10-24-2005, 07:28 PM nice job so far! i'm working on my k20 ek coupe stilll....just need paint :( eph2 10-25-2005, 11:03 AM This project is gonna be cool. Nice Start! blueboost 10-31-2005, 12:18 PM The KA swap would not fit with the stock fan and radiator from the DC2. You can sand the fans down a good bit and still retain detail. Here is a shot showing the sanded down fans, next to the engine. In this shot, the interior is still wet with a coat of flat black. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/Blueboost/K20build5.jpg Let her dry and voila, here's a shot from the test fit. Engine isn't mounted so it looks cocked in the bay, but she fits! :lol2: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/Blueboost/K20build7.jpg First problem is making the RSX's valve cover look more like the Type-R. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/Blueboost/K20build1.jpg I sanded and scored lines with an xacto and dental tools to change the shape http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/Blueboost/K20build3.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/Blueboost/K20build4.jpg Then I began the paint detail http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/Blueboost/K20build8.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/Blueboost/K20build.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/Blueboost/K20build11.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/Blueboost/K20build10.jpg I need to thin some black paint and get it between the plug cover and valve cover (between the silver and red parts) using capillary action. I got really tired at the stage you see it at, and stopped for the night. There is plenty more to do, as it needs plenty of touching up. I think it is shaping up ok so far though. Also, I will be using the beautiful RSX-S seats instead of the crap that comes with the type-r. I snapped a quick pic for you to show the difference. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/Blueboost/DSCF0078.jpg drnitrus 10-31-2005, 05:54 PM great job so far amusegt1 10-31-2005, 06:07 PM Very Nice! keep up the good work! chyknees 10-31-2005, 10:21 PM nice job so far...good job on making the vc look like a type-r sideshowscrappy 10-31-2005, 10:32 PM Great job on reworking that valve cover man. I am gonna be picking up that super street kit for the k-20 and drop it in an EK. Your is coming along great though. Can't wait for some more progress man...............*Ryan* willimo 10-31-2005, 10:52 PM Nice detail on the valve cover. Looks 100x better than the lump that it originally was. Thankg God for eBay, I got one of them RSXs for $12! sideshowscrappy 10-31-2005, 10:55 PM lol ya they have the RSX at my local walmart for $13 so i'm gonna be headin over there to pick 1 or 2 up.............*Ryan* MidMazar 10-31-2005, 11:37 PM Give it a TURBO!! ImolaEK 11-01-2005, 05:05 PM looking good:) Mean_B16 01-08-2006, 02:25 PM Nice project, I will be following this one. It looks like I will be adding K power to my model garage soon :naughty: BTW isn't Revell coming out with a plastic RSX kit???? Anybody know when??? drifter_fan 01-08-2006, 10:39 PM looks awesome man! cant wait to see the finished pics. blueboost 01-28-2006, 12:47 AM little update. Fiddling around with a manifold and turbo. Re-doing some of the valve cover due to scoring the line too thick. Log style manifold built, fitted to engine, engine test fitted into bay. Looks pretty rough right now, but hopefully that will change. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/Blueboost/DSCF0117.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/Blueboost/DSCF0113.jpg chyknees 01-28-2006, 03:00 AM wow, that motor is coming together very nicely. loving the turbo set-up. can't wait to see the ic/piping/etc. g'luck blueboost 01-30-2006, 01:14 AM pretty rough in those last shots, hopefully I didn't scare everyone away. :frown: Worked on the plumbing and valve cover. The plumbing is not finished. You can see where I joined pipes together, which will be covered with pipe couplers and fasteners later on. Those mold lines on the hot pipe need to be sanded off. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/Blueboost/DSCF0125.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/Blueboost/DSCF0122.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/Blueboost/DSCF0127.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/Blueboost/DSCF0126.jpg willimo 01-30-2006, 01:20 AM Late Sunday night is a good time to post progress, apparently. That turbo looks pretty good, dude, it will be great all neslted into the engine bay. Yay Honda for finally turning your motors around, too. 675datsun 01-30-2006, 02:24 AM Way to go with the turbo setup!! I think it will spice things up as it is status quo to have a K-series in your DC nowadays:grinyes: Damn those are some buzzwords for this Datsun head... I've got some pics of blown K-series motors from the last car show, like this one if you need reference: http://community.webshots.com/photo/546621822/2247102860084697152pUDlrE See if you can fab up one of those engine damper thingys...those are tight! MITeggy17 01-30-2006, 03:02 PM It looks pretty sweet, keep it up! travis712 02-07-2006, 08:34 PM Good stuff there, i'm doing the revell integra. Actually been doing it for a year lol. Just haven't got around to painting the body. Doesn't help thats its around 20* here, ugh. itrgtr 02-08-2006, 12:52 AM great work so far. kicker1_solo 02-09-2006, 08:21 PM I know I'm a little late seeing as how you're probably done with the motor part of it, but here's a couple pics for ya, both in integras. http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/wetoddimage.wtdr/wNjYzMDcwNnM0MTNkZmQzMXk1NDE%3D.jpg http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/wetoddimage.wtdr/wNjYzMDcxNnM0MTNkZmQzMXk1NDE%3D.jpg http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b264/bodgybros/BADHBT/100_1629.jpg http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b264/bodgybros/BADHBT/100_1634.jpg slimsi99 02-10-2006, 01:01 AM That's looking nice, K20 into an ITR...nice. I am SLOWLY starting a Revell ITR myself and was going to use the B18C5, but after seeing tht work of art I don't know. I will keep following this one. blueboost 02-13-2006, 07:09 PM Little update: Well, its nothing ground breaking but im having fun with it, and thats all that matters to me. Added a few couplers and clamps, finished painting the cast iron exhaust stuff. still have a ways to go, plenty of things including valve cover need more touched/detailed. These pics you can see where I had to grind away the block a bit to make it fit soundly, and more scratch turbo goodness. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/Blueboost/K20T-2.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/Blueboost/K20T-3.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/Blueboost/K20T-4.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/Blueboost/K20T-1.jpg D[X]P 02-13-2006, 09:21 PM Wow, looks very nice, especially the engine choice.
