Since hearing there was a whole 1:25 K20 engine available, I've been itching to swap one. The plans on this project are to take a revell DC2 type-R, and swap in the Revell super street RSX K20 drivetrain, and turbocharge it.

Here are the kits needed for this build

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/Blueboost/DSCF0062.jpg

the beginning-

The goal is to put this-

into this-

Wish it could be a SR20DET going into a curbside S14. Maybe one day.

If you see the thread bump to the top, check for the updates if your interested.

Alright it's about time! You'll be the first here?

I never understood why one would take a Type-R(B-series) engine out and replace it with a K20R...but here's a pic of one at a local show:

Look forward to the progress!

Great! This will be a blast to watch. I also wanted to swap it, probably into an EG but I might do better to stick with another Revell kit for scale's sake. I can't wait to see what you do here.

K is the new B. There are a lot of funny things about the K20's, but they're growing a pretty strong following and show as much potential as the Bs did but with even more to start with. Trick things like i-Vtec and the fact that the intake is in the front and the exhaust in the back make it an obvious move forward from the B series, and they're not much bigger of heavier. Plus, they react better to the popular turbocharging.

Supaman- I think I have pretty good reference material to work with, but if he has anything already up and hosted i'd love to see it. thanks man.

well, you just keep your hands covering that can of worms you opened. :lol2:

I haven't seen a white US market front with the swap in person, pics (until just now), or done as a model on the board, in any color. Thanks for the inspiration 675datsun. :iceslolan

Hey I knew you'd appreciate that! I think the K-series engines are the bomb but what I didn't get is why this particular person would take a REAL ITR and swap out the original engine(no slouch) for a K20, isn't that sacrilige amongst the Honda crowd?. A K20 in a stock EG or something else would make sense...end rant!

I think you are wrong on this one. They have 11.5:1 compression ratio which is not turbo friendly at all. you would be better off spraying that motor then using a turbo on stock internals.

The KA swap would not fit with the stock fan and radiator from the DC2. You can sand the fans down a good bit and still retain detail. Here is a shot showing the sanded down fans, next to the engine. In this shot, the interior is still wet with a coat of flat black.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/Blueboost/K20build5.jpg

Let her dry and voila, here's a shot from the test fit. Engine isn't mounted so it looks cocked in the bay, but she fits! :lol2:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/Blueboost/K20build7.jpg

First problem is making the RSX's valve cover look more like the Type-R.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/Blueboost/K20build1.jpg

I sanded and scored lines with an xacto and dental tools to change the shape

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/Blueboost/K20build3.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/Blueboost/K20build4.jpg

Then I began the paint detail

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/Blueboost/K20build8.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/Blueboost/K20build.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/Blueboost/K20build11.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/Blueboost/K20build10.jpg

I need to thin some black paint and get it between the plug cover and valve cover (between the silver and red parts) using capillary action. I got really tired at the stage you see it at, and stopped for the night. There is plenty more to do, as it needs plenty of touching up. I think it is shaping up ok so far though.

Also, I will be using the beautiful RSX-S seats instead of the crap that comes with the type-r. I snapped a quick pic for you to show the difference.

little update. Fiddling around with a manifold and turbo. Re-doing some of the valve cover due to scoring the line too thick. Log style manifold built, fitted to engine, engine test fitted into bay. Looks pretty rough right now, but hopefully that will change.

pretty rough in those last shots, hopefully I didn't scare everyone away. :frown:

Worked on the plumbing and valve cover. The plumbing is not finished. You can see where I joined pipes together, which will be covered with pipe couplers and fasteners later on. Those mold lines on the hot pipe need to be sanded off.

Late Sunday night is a good time to post progress, apparently. That turbo looks pretty good, dude, it will be great all neslted into the engine bay. Yay Honda for finally turning your motors around, too.

Way to go with the turbo setup!! I think it will spice things up as it is status quo to have a K-series in your DC nowadays:grinyes: Damn those are some buzzwords for this Datsun head...

I've got some pics of blown K-series motors from the last car show, like this one if you need reference:

See if you can fab up one of those engine damper thingys...those are tight!

I know I'm a little late seeing as how you're probably done with the motor part of it, but here's a couple pics for ya, both in integras.

That's looking nice, K20 into an ITR...nice. I am SLOWLY starting a Revell ITR myself and was going to use the B18C5, but after seeing tht work of art I don't know. I will keep following this one.

Little update:

Well, its nothing ground breaking but im having fun with it, and thats all that matters to me.

Added a few couplers and clamps, finished painting the cast iron exhaust stuff. still have a ways to go, plenty of things including valve cover need more touched/detailed. These pics you can see where I had to grind away the block a bit to make it fit soundly, and more scratch turbo goodness.
