Loud squeal when AC clutch engages

My 2001 Honda Accord EX V6, 67,800 miles, suddenly began to make loud squealing noises tonight about 1/2 mile before I got home while driving about 30 MPH. When I got home I determined that it only makes the noise when the AC clutch is engaged. (Yes we're still using AC here in Texas.) AC has worked fine up to this point.

Any guesses on what this is? Belt is original but looks OK. Is this just a bad belt or a belt needing adjustment? Could the compressor have frozen? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Tom

If the belt looks ok, (not cracked or glazed over) then I would check the belt tension, and adjust if needed.

You all were right on. I found that the top metal alternator bracket had broken causing the alternator to sag down and take tension off the belt. The Honda dealer parts lady said they had the part in stock for $6.95. So I plan to pick it up tomorrow and hopefully the problem will be solved.

The belt uses a tensioner so there does not seem to be any adjustment.

Thanks,
Tom
