Question about rear hatch issues, 2003- RRs

Hi everybody,
I'm new to the forum and just got my first RR - a 2005 blue on tan HSE. I think the vehicle is awesome, and I'm happy to have gotten the last of the BMW engines.
I have a question - have any fellow RR owners (models 2003 - current) had any issues or accidents when closing the rear hatch? I find it curious that RR puts the rear hatch handle deep inside the vehicle, and that there is no hydraulic "brake" that slows down the hatch before it completely closes. Needless to say, I ask because I almost lost a finger (literally) when the rear hatch caught my finger, and worse, the latch mechanism opened and clamped my finger. I'm pretty frustrated with myself, but equally with the design.
Anybody else with similar experiences?
