passlock on 2000 malibu

I am having the same problems with my 2000 malibu. The only difference is that I have to disconnect the computer to get it started. I asked the dealer where I bought it what the problem was, he told me it was the passlock. He also told me that it would cost me $400.00 to $500.00 to get it fixed. I don't know about anyone else but I am sick of being stranded for 10 to 20 minutes. Any help would be appreciated.

Find the toggle switch under the dash near the brake pedal and toggle the passlock off.

Have battery checked. Had problems with passlock on my 2000 Alero, replaced the battery and it works fine. Battery wasn't giving enough juice to start car on initial try and that failure resulted in the stupid passlock system engaging.

Thanks but that is not it. This has been an ongoing problem for years. It is a problem in the passlock system. I think it is in the ignition key sensor. I just want to turn it off.

OK. I have explained this before, but since you are sooooo nice, the toggle switch is hidden. You look behind that plastic cover that is against the firewall on the inside,. Look for the red LED by the trunk lid release then follow it to the back wall where the carpet meets the plastic. You will pull the p[lastic out and if you follow the LED correctly, you'll find the toggle switch.

Hi, sorry to repeat the same questions, but I'm trying to help out a co worker and am not familiar with this vehicle. His vehicle has a similar problem and would like to disconnect the passlock to see if it helps.
We removed the plastic cover that is located above and to the left of the brake pedal which extends to the firewall.(I didn't notice any plastic cover on the firewall) I also don't see the red LED near the trunk release switch. Can you offer any other help in locating the toggle switch.

Thanks,
Mark

What year is your car? It should have the red LED.

Hi, the car is a 2000 Malibu. I tried pressing the trunk release button to see if the LED would light up making it more visible, but still don't see anything. Since I poked around and moved the wires around the car is behaving normally. Maybe moving the wires/connectors made for a better contact? I still would like to locate the toggle switch though.
I removed the second plastic cover that is above the gas pedal area and didn't see a toggle switch there either. Any other explanation or even picture would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again,
Mark

The toggle switch is not obvious - it is not screwed into a fitting. It just hangs there behind the plactic cover. I''ll try and get pictures for you but are you sure you have the passive alarm?

Hi, thanks for your reply. The vehicle has the anti theft light on the dash. The light comes on when you start the vehicle and then goes out. It was staying on while driving the vehicle (either flashing or solid) Once in a while the car would not start and had to wait 10 minutes for it to reset itself. Now since moving the wires a littlle it seems to be operating normally (Light comes on when you start the car and goes out after a few seconds) Does the passive alarm come with the keyless entry? What other ways are there to check what system the vehicle is equipped with? I'll look into it tomorrow.
Thanks again,
Mark

Checked with my co-worker and car does not have keyless entry, so I assume that would indicate no passive alarm??? I am beginning to wonder if it was just a loose wire/connection all along. If & when the problem arises he would probably rather disconnect the anti theft if possible.

Thanks,
Mark

bcopeland, thanks for answering the other member's question. These posts reminded me of my own problem.

I own a 2000 Malibu. Two years ago in the fall, sometimes while inserting the key to start the system, the anti-theft passlock would kick in. After waiting 10 minutes, the system would then work. After this occurring in a bad neighborhood, I took the car to the dealer. For $400 they replaced a sensor in the ignition system.

Everything worked fine until the following fall. (I live in northern ca where it doesn't snow.) I took the car to the dealer and they could not reproduce the error. I discovered that sometimes after waiting 10 minutes, the system might work, or might not work and I would need to wait another 10 minutes. After examining my key, I found that it was significantly worn down, so I switched to another key, which only works when inserted the right way. OSH didn't copy the key exactly =( .

Now that it is fall again, I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to solve this problem.

I considered buying an aftermarket remote starter to bypass the passlock system, but I'm not an automotive expert!

Thanks

Is this information that is in the GM service manual? I have the same problem and would like to find this toggle switch. I can't seem to find any information on it in my ALLDATA system. Where did you find this info.?

I have bought an after market remote starter for my 98 Malibu. Sometimes when I use the remote start the pass lock will activate and the car will not start for 10 minutes. I had the remote starter replaced and it still happens so it is my pass lock system that is the problem. I was told there is no way to disable this system. Anyoune have any ideas?

I checked the manual that came with the car and it seems on the 2000 Malibu (Canada) that all cars are equipped with Passlock which is described as "Passive Theft Deterrent System" So I guess that means there should be a toggle switch. If anyone can help us to locate this toggle switch to disconnect the passlock it would be greatly appreciated by myself and I'm sure many others.

Thanks,
Mark

My dads malibu has the same problem. He looked for the toggle switch and so did i. We both couldnt find it. Do u have to pull up the carpeting behind the brake pedal and that hard plastic too. Or is it higher up inside the dash?

A pic would be really great if possible

I have a 2000 Chevy Malibu with the anti theft also but it has a kill switch. There is a small slot located under the steering column with a red blinking light when I stick the micro chip key thing into it it turns green and I can start the car. Is there any way to bypass this or get another chip made? Please help.
