I turn the ignition to START and all I hear is a click. Sometimes it will work the next time I try to start it, other times it takes a couple of attempts. I have just replaced the battery so I know it isn't that.

More than likely, it's the solenoid contacts and I was planning on replacing them, but I have a few questions...

First, does anyone know any part numbers for the Toyota starter repair kit? The starter is made by Denco I think. I've seen part #'s mentioned for 4Runner and PreRunner (I think is was 28226-72010), but not my model. I don't know if they're interchangeable. I can't easily take the starter apart and drive to the store to compare the solenoid contacts, as this is my only vehicle.

Second, any tips for removing the starter? Several people have suggested removing the wheel and the rubber cover, which will definitely save time. One bolt looks accessable from the side, while one looks more accessable from the top (but it's way down there). Are any special tools or attachments like ratchet extenders, etc. required? I don't have access to jack stands, only my stock jack and a hydraulic one.

Any help would be appreciated.

before you do ANYTHING i would check the clutch starter switch located right by the pedal and then go from there.

Welcome to the AF!

Get the starter repair kit from Toyota by giving them your VIN. They should know exactly which one you need.

I got the part from Toyota, but not the whole kit. For some reason, even after calling multiple times just to make sure, they didn't have it in stock. At least not for my truck, said their computer. But the guy did have the contacts for $15 each, which is a ridiculous price, but I got 3 anyway as they were the ONLY people around that had anything close to what I needed. He said I could return the one I didn't use and get a refund.

$30 is still better than $130 for a new starter or $430 for Toyota to install a new one.

The funny thing is, is that starting on the trip to Toyota, the truck started without a hitch and has been starting every time since then. It is acting like it doesn't have a problem anymore. I still plan on checking it this weekend.

And what is it about this clutch starter switch?

That's the way these things act. When the hear you're going to work on them, they get scared and act right for a while until you return the parts. Then they act up again. Never fails.

The clutch starter switch is behind the clutch pedal and tells the engine you've depressed the clutch and allows you to start the engine. If you don't press the clutch, no start.

As far as the cost of the contacts goes, did you try either of these? You can always return those.
