What exactly is hand over hand steering? Is the the technique where your hands never cross, instead you're turning the wheel just small amounts at a time? Is it really advantageous driving like that? I remember taking drivers ed and the teacher telling me to drive hand over hand, but I could never figure it out.

BTW 3000 posts!!!

yes, nearly every race driving instructor tells you to never cross your hands, the advantage is that your hands never leave the wheel and you can make small adjustments and feel the feedback that the wheel is giving you thoughout the turn, you're also ready to countersteer if the back end starts to step out.

drivers ed instructors tell you to drive hand over hand because a lot of larger vehicles have to be driven that way to get around parking lots and slow turns. Even if the drivers ed car doesn't have to be driven that way, they don't want you getting into a UHaul and trying to drive it like a Miata.

Makes sense now. I will try to do this more often from now on.
