Need help (99 GT)graphicassult 09-26-2005, 09:21 PM So i'm debating on getting a 99 Gran Prix GT. This thing is NICE! I'm in love with it and have a loan approved and everything, but i just found out that the REAR OIL MAIN is shot, how big of a problem and how much would that run me? Also any other main problems with this year would be a plus! Thanks guys regalfriend 09-26-2005, 10:40 PM are you buying the car from a dealer or private person? graphicassult 09-26-2005, 10:42 PM private person i have them at 4000 right now richtazz 09-27-2005, 04:29 PM Depending on the mileage and options, $4000 is a great deal. Replacing the rear main is a MAJOR job. IT will require removal of the transaxle to gain access. If you can't do it yourself, expect a $600 or bigger bill. Also any other main problems with this year would be a plus! Thanks guys I'm just gonna contribute the problems ive had with mine. In the 5 months that ive had my car, id had a lot of work. I had to have the spark plugs and manifold replaced, which ruined my starter. That cost me $400. Then, I had to replace one of the window switches, and that cost me $100. Finally, I had the intake gasket blow and cause some decent carnage within the engine. That would've cost me $900, but the dealer fixed it free of charge. I wish woulda done that with the other two problems, because they probably woulda covered those too. Besides those, I love my GP, great car with enough power for my needs. Also, I think the person who had the car before me mistreated it, but i suppose i can't prove it. Anyway, point is, no matter what car you buy, if you buy it used, you're taking a chance. GP's in general tend to be pretty good though. regalfriend 09-30-2005, 09:27 PM If i pay more than $1000 for a car i try to make sure it has no problems....If the car is as nice as you say, it still may be a gamble. There may be more problems that are not so obvious. There is nothing worse than having car payments that outlast your car... vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
