My 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee loredo will not start. It is not the battery or the starter (as i have had them both checked out). When I put the key into the ignition and turn it untill the battery is powering everything, but not to make it start, i hear this strange clicking sound and the oil guage is flikering back and forth randomly. When I go to start it farther it makes no sound at all. It seems that when it is in the battery position the cruise controle moule is vibrating. CAN anyone help me fix this problem. I would really appreciate any help or sujestions at all.

from your description, I take it the engine is not turning at all when you try to start it?
The click you hear is it a LOUD click or rapid clicks?

SOunds like there isn't enough power getting to the starter. I would verify the battery has enought cranking power to star, and make sure the pos. and neg. cables are free from corrision. It's definately related to the battery

I would also like to add, were you doing anything before this incident? 4x4ing or anything. The reason I ask about the clicking, I went wheeli' once and hit this big puddle pretty fast and sucked a whole load of water into the engine, well the engine end up cutting out, leaving my stranded in the middle of this huge puddle, got the ZJ out and it would start, just one LOUD CLICK whenever I would try to start the jeep. Thought my starter went bad, so I replaced it still nothing, had plenty of voltage from the battery knew that wasn't it, so I started removing my spark plugs one by one whille trying to start it after I removed each on to see if one of my plugs were locked-up till it finally turned over. and that was the problem water got into my combustion chamber and locked up one or more pf my spark plugs keeping them from sparking, and not allowing the engine to turn. So replaced the plugs and changes the oil and filter and it rand good after wards.

NOTE: if you find out that your plugs are locked, remove all the plugs and crank the engine over a few times (10 times) just to make sure you get all the water out of the combustion chamber, then replace the plugs with new ones and change the oil and filter. After I finally changed everything it took me about an hour to finally get it to start again, I had to have another vehicle there to jump from because my battery kept dying from cranking and cranking.

Well it was semi loud clicks I was hearing but after replacing 2 of the relays the loud clicking stopped. Now when I turn on the starter none of the guages are vibrating like before but it is making a light clicking sound whenever i go to start it. I checked the Spark Plugs an that wasn't it. I am at a loss. :banghead:

try cleaning the battery post and cables and make sure they are tight

also make sure the negine is not siezed by putting a socket on the crank pulley bolt and turning it clockwise.

With the gauges flickering and the noises you describe, it's definately part of the charging system. I would take a close look @ all the connections to the battery.
