Hi,

I have a g reg 1.8 diesel escort van.

Its never let me down once, but recently it has started to sqeak at startup, it stops if i hold it at half revs for about 10 seconds, then its fine.

It soudns like a belt slipping, but its ovioulsy not the timing belt, or esle it deffnitally woujldnt be running, and the only other belt i can see is the alternator belt, whitch isnt sqeaking, i have tried to listne to where it is comeing from and sounds like it might be coming from the box where the throttle is attached to and the disel injector pipes come from, but might not be.

Anyone have any ideas because its getting worse each week, and starting to get anoying

Thanks in advance

Darren

Do you have self-service car washes in the United Kingdom? If so try soaping and rinsing the accessory belt while the engine is running. Cover your alternator and ignition while you do this, then rinse. If the noise goes away, it is the accessory belt. They're cheap. Even cheaper than an Escort Van sucking up diesel fuel. Replace it. Cheers.

What does it drive?

The accessory belt is that which drives everything but the timing belt. The alternator, power steering and airconditioning if you have it. It may be a Serpentine (5 or 6 ridges) or it may be a standard belt that is smooth.

It could need tightening. If you deflect it with your hand very much it needs tightening. I was going to say 1/2 inch, but you use metric there, don't you? Just figured metic. Use 20 mm as a guide. If your belt is glazed (shiny) this would be a good time to change it. Your belt could have glaze on it that causes it to slip. The slipping causes the belt to heat up and then no more squeaky sounds. If at possible, replace the belt.

Hi,

Thanks i will have a look tomorrow.

Just incase it isnt, is it possible to get a sqeak form the box where the tbhrottle cable goes, and the fuel lines come from on there way to the injectors?

Because tehre are oviously movin parts in here, is it possible that its meant to be oiled but takes a few secodns for the oil to get through?

Thanks

Darren

Yes It Is possible. Get a can of spray lubricant and spray where you hear the squeak. Don't spray the belt with this. They say try the simple solutions first so maybe this is all it needs. Dave

how about the belt tensionier that applies pressure to that serpentine belt?
