89 Caprice trannyBullfrog66 09-21-2005, 02:14 PM Howdy, My nephew has a 89 caprice-305-auto, it recently ran hot boilin the water out of the radiator, and the tranny then started slipping. We replaced the radiator, changed the tranny fluid and filter, which was as black as 2 year old motor oil. The car runs great, but it still wants to slip when mashin the gas. It will move, but not record speed. I have searched everywhere here, and read several different ideas, what is this T V cable deal and also this has a electric plug in the tranny instaed of reg mod valve. what should I do next? any ideas? And #2, will a tranny out of any GM vehicle swap out with these? What years will interchange, if so? Thanks CAPRICE LIFE 09-21-2005, 07:36 PM wassup i had a 88 caprice that slipped when i changed the tranny fluid and strainer. it eventually stopped after a couple of days of driving. u can change trannies if u wanna. u just need to make sure that the bolt patterns r the same when u get a new one. the t.v. cable is for the speedometer. hope this helps CD Smalley 09-21-2005, 10:13 PM Sorry but the TV cable is not for the speedo. It is used to adjust the line pressure/shift points. Read this for how to do the adjustment: http://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/detent.shtml PeteA216 09-22-2005, 08:51 PM Yeah, I cranked my TV cable as tight as it would go, and it now shifts very firm for me... I'm not sure if thats a good thing, but I like how it runs when its like that... I guess thats just me. Anyway, its very likely that when it boiled over it was because the tranny was overheating because the tranny also uses the radiator to cool itself. You may have burnt it up. Bullfrog66 09-22-2005, 09:50 PM Thanks for the quick replies, I wiil try the TV cable adjustment tommorrow. Hope this helps. Will a tranny out of a caddy swap out with this? if it is the same year and a V8. What other trannys are interchangable with this? Thanks 400wagon 09-23-2005, 11:40 AM any 700r4 tranny should swap into there. Make sure it is from an 85 or later though, before that, some of them had some issues. Probably any caprice from 85 up (until they switched to computer controlled trannies.) Look at the pan shape and the number of bolts on the pan on the bottom. If they are the same, then it should fit. The TV cable is vital to the life of the trans. IF it is out of adjustment, you can burn up the tranny real quick, like a few thousand miles or less. If the fluid out of your tranny was black as used oil, I would say it is shot. You will probably need a new one. Bullfrog66 10-15-2005, 11:17 AM where are the model no.s at to tell what kind of trans this is? on top of the bell housing lookin down behind carb, I can see looks like 410 XX. is this the bell housing no or what? Some say this is a 7004r saome say a 200r4. how to tell for sure? Thanks again silicon212 10-15-2005, 11:40 AM 1989 stock transmission for 305 on a Caprice is a 200-4R. You will need a new driveshaft if you install a TH700-R4 as this transmission is longer than the 200-4R. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
