i just recently got a 1989 Ford Escort - it has the 1.9 liter engine CFI - i drove the car home and it ran rough - i put new plugs/wires/cap/rotor in it and that the car just purred like a kitten - i drove it around for about a half hour and came home and shut the car off - about 45 minutes later i went to drive the car again and it wouldnt start - it cranks but doesnt seem to be getting any fuel - i put a new fuel filter but no progress - there is defienately fuel in the tank - next i thought that it was the fuel pump becuase even with your ear to the tank you couldnt hear it running - so i dropped the fuel tank and directly wired the pump to the battery and it ran great - with the fuel pump directly wired to the battery i then tried to start it, still nothing - after taking the fuel line off after the fuel filter and then turning the pump on it sprayes gas which eliminates the possibility of a plug line - thats where i sit now - some things that i have thought about is that there may be a fuse blown - all the fuses in the box under the dash and in proper working order - is there a fuse box somewhere hidden in the engine compartment i cannot seem to find one or is there a inline fuse somewhere that i am missing - is my injector plugged? is there a way to test it? - the car will fire and run if gas it poured directly into the throttle body - this problem seems to be fuel related but just puzzles me - any comments/leads would be greatly appreciated

my car did something like that when i first got it, at total random it wouldnt fire 3 shops and 6 months to find the computer was junk the shop found a used one and been fine ever sence. I wouldnt have fuel or spark when it was in the no start mode. Everything was replace such as coil, plugs, wires, pcm, ignition, battery, battery cables, fuel cut off. and so on.

I had a similar problem with an 88 Wagon. Mine has Trottle Body Fuel Injection if that makes any difference. Mine will start if I hold the gas peddle on the floor while cranking. I also had to disconnct the battery (to clear all error codes) and then follow the directions in the Owner's Manual for resetting the idle speed control motor.
