back-up light switchhowru 09-19-2005, 10:18 PM Dear friends, It has been a while since I fixed the "blue-smoke" problem with the help from this forum. Thank you again for the helps. This time both of the backup lights don't light up and I failed the state inspection. I have checked the fuses and the wires in the trunk, all seem ok. So I am suspecting the "back-up light switch" is bad. Where is the switch? Do I need to remove anything to reach it? Thanks. My car is a 2000 Camry, 4 cyl, automatic transmission. I measured the voltage between the pins in the bulb connectors when the car is in reverse . And there is no voltage. So it's not likely the problem of the bulbs. Thanks. :( JOET/CAMRY 09-19-2005, 10:57 PM I didn't check the bulbs directly. I measured the voltage between the pins in the bulb connectors when the car is in reverse . And there is no voltage. Thanks. :( howru, sometimes people overlook the obvious like the bulbs. thats why I asked about it. sure sounds like a bad switch. you should get power to the reverse lights bulb sockets when the car is in reverse. When you measured the voltage was the key in the on position? I have a 1989 camry and my reverse lights won't work unless the car is running or unless the key is in the on position. the switch should be located beside the shifter. you have to remove the trim around the shifter to get at it. :disappoin Good luck, JOET/CAMRY howru 09-20-2005, 10:04 AM Thanks, Joet. Yes, I checked the voltage with the engine on. What is the shifter? What is the trim? Could you describe the backup light switch a little bit? what does it look like? The manual says it's on the transmission. But it seems many lines coming out of the transmission and I am not sure which is the one I am looking for. Thanks. Hello howru, you might want to search the forum for ( backup light switch )and ( reverse light switch ). their are a few posts from people with the same problem that you are having with your car. my knowledge about this problem is limited. I thought the reverse/backup light switch was located beside the gear shifter. im not positive about this. Hopefully someone else with knowledge about this problem can help you out. sorry I couldn't help you out more. :disappoin Regards, JOET/CAMRY xgvpp0 09-26-2005, 01:21 AM howru, Did you check the bulbs for the backup lights. you don't mention it in your post. :uhoh: JOET/CAMRY check the wirings. it may be broken due to the trunk lid. if not it, it must be fuse or brake light sensor unit. good luck bun howru 09-26-2005, 02:18 PM Thanks for the replies. I am still working on it. After many trials and errors, I got to know one thing: the back-up light switch is built in the neutral safety switch (PNP switch). I will update you friends. howru 09-26-2005, 02:46 PM Since the PNP switch is an expensive unit, now my question is: how can I test that it is the failure in PNP switch causing the back-up light off? The car reverses OK, "check engine" light is not on. howru 09-30-2005, 10:44 PM Finally, after many efforts, I found the problem. The wire was cut somewhere around the hinge under the trunk lid.
