I just droped a 670+ Hp motor into my mom's Nissan (around the same size as an S-10)
And I thought that I would show you how I did it.

Check it out here

The moter honestly went into the dyno pumping out 653hp, and left with 673 hp at the crank shaft. On 94 octane pump gas! without Nitros

I'll be starting another thread with the final Dyno reading later today on that subject

I discovered that the Dyno is good for more than measuring hp in a high performance motor.
That motor would have been fried the first time that it was opened up in a car.

What problems did you find with the new motor?

I will be rebuilding a Chevy 350 soon and would like any tips you can give.

There were the normal oil leaks and water leaks that even new motors get when sit for a while. My friend built this motor up about 2 years ago and never did anything with it until now.

The problem that would have blown the motor is that my friend used valve train stablizers and didn't use lock nuts on the valve adjusters
http://www.cranecams.com/include/showImage.php?type=heading&id=53
These didn't lock the nuts like they're suposed to, and 4 of the valve adjusters backed off. 1 of the push rods fell out which we caught instantly but wouldn't have on the road.

Another problem that showed up is the bottom valve cover bolts started sucking through the soft alumine holes of the valve covers. And also loosening off.
When 1 fell out and oil sprayed on the exhaust it looked like the motor blew since there was suddenly a BIG cloud of blue smoke. It would have been a scare on the road.

And the jetting was too lean, so it would have eventially burnt the valves. Although not right away.

All the power was gained through jetting, and also trying different timing untill it pumped out max horse power

When we had this motor on the Dyno we were talking to the tech and he figured that the reason why it was producing so much power was mostly the heads.
They're Dart heads, that were machined by Bill Mitchell
This link shows some of his work
http://www.theengineshop.com/116_0303_block_pg1.shtml

The cam is also BIG, and we burned about 1 U.S. gallon of fuel for every minute that the motor ran.

The pistons are flat tops, and the heads were origionally made for dome pistons, so they were angle shaved to boost the compression to 10.3 to 1

The carb is a holly 1050 double pumper, and the dyno showed that it was just about perfect for the motor.
If you run a motor onto a dyno try bringing in an assortment of both carbs and jetts to fine tune it.
Plus we had to order some gaskets that weren't available in BC's third largest city, so look into that ahead of time.

My friend built the motor up for about $6000 watching the car swaps for parts.
The heads were new, along with the carb and the intake manifold.
The bottom end was a former racing motor, that had the oil pan sucked dry destroying some bearings.
The machine shop fixxed this easily.

If he would have bought a crate motor with the same stuff it would have cost him $12000 - $15000.

My friend also builds up small blocks. His specialty is 400ci small block chevy's.
I could ask him for advice on any subject if you want.

Sorry Ryan.
It's going into a friends 72 Chevelle.

If I ever get the time and a few extra thousand bux I'll do up a 2wd Blazer with one of those killer motors.

Oh, I forgot to mention, they worked it out and the motor can safely handle another 400hp with Nitrous, and my friend has the kit to put on it. He's thinking about it but hasn't decided yet..

It's a Chevy 427 commercial tall deck block, board and stroked out to a 496CI motor

The Dyno was only set up 4 months ago, but it's the most powerfull street motor that they've tested by far. Not including the motors that have Nitrous kits installed

That's perfect, then tell him we'll only need 3 bays, and 1 hoist to do the job the job. :naughty:

Ask your boss if they can bring in all the parts required for the swap.

The parts should of course all be supplied for free since the conversion will be good advertising :smokin:

Plus we should both be paid double time while doing the job!
