Air Flow Meter Compatibility

I have a 1992 Legacy VZ (2.0l non-turbo). I have a low speed (<2000rpm) miss and also rough cold running. The mechanic tested the air flow meter and it returned a fault code. He suggested that since it runs reasonably well when hot not to bother replacing it with a second hand one unless it got worse or annoyed me. He can supply a tested one for $NZ150 (approx $US100) but they are available cheaper privately.

What I'm wondering is which meters are compatible, e.g. from newer models, turbo models, etc, or where to find this info.

Thanks.

Try a salvage yard with an interchange manual.

I called a Subaru specialist in the end and the answer was obvious: make sure the part numbers match. I located a fully functional one via an on-line auction.

Opps I forgot to add that the new meter didn't make any noticable difference. I have since had the whole engine management system checked and two of the coil packs (individaul ones for each spark plug on teh quad-cam models) needed replacing. Ouch! But it does go better now.
