I have a 97 Altima with 130 k miles. The front end rattles when turning sharply in either direction. A mechanic looked at it and told me my CV boots and tie rods were bad. He sugested replacing the entire front axial. Is this realy the problem and solution?

Torn rubber CV joint boots are common on front wheel drive vehicles. If the boots are not repaired, the grease gets washed away, the CV Joint wears, and they start making a clicking noise when a sharp turn is made. If they are making noise, I recommend replacing the axles. After the CV Joints are worn, cleaning, repacking with grease and replacing the boots may not eliminate the noise. The axles are equivalent to a drive shaft in a rear wheel drive vehicle. They are not difficult to replace and do not effect front end alignment. I think remanufactured axles cost $80 at AutoZone. The tie rod ends are a separate issue. Inspection is the only way to know if tie rod ends are worn.
