Worn bearings = loose bearings?zephram22 09-11-2005, 02:18 AM Hey guys and gals. Can loose water pump bearings be the same as worn water pump bearings? Usually when I think of worn bearings, I think of seizing components. I recently replaced the water pump on my 99. The old and the new pump were identical, right down to the material that the impeller was made of. The only different I noticed while examing the two the that the old pumped turned with almost no resistance when I turned the water pump pully by hand. The new pump has a firmer feel and actually puts up a little resistances while turning it. Could loose bearings in a water pump cause air to get sucked into the coolant system at higher engine speeds? Could loose bearings on a water pump cause an engine to overheat? maxwedge 09-11-2005, 09:50 AM Generally no, are you loosing coolant what exactly is the problem. zephram22 09-11-2005, 02:39 PM Generally no, are you loosing coolant what exactly is the problem. Sorry, but. I just went to a mechanic and asked him the same question. In this case I was right. Because my pump had loose bearings, air was getting sucked in at higher engine speeds. maxwedge 09-11-2005, 04:03 PM Wrong, How does a cooling system operating under 15 psi suck in air?. Yes shut if off and cool down, possible air could enter past the seal in pump not the bearing. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
