any change fluid in transfer case

has i listed in another thread my nissan dealership is not to confident in the answers to my questions. the transfer case for and automatic transmition takes atf III right. about how many quarts would it take. is there any problems i might run in to .

I use GL4 oil.

so the transfer case in an automatic xterra is gear oil no ATF III. why would it matter what transmition you have. dose the fluid from the automatic transmition flow through the transfer case

The transfer case gear oil does not flow with the automatic transmission oil. They are separate units. Some people with Automatics use ATF, but I have stayed with GL4 in my standard as it doesn't corrode the brass fittings like GL5. Nissan didn't do anyone any favors by using a gear oil that is pretty hard to find. There are some synthetics like Royal Purple that are easier to get at Xterraparts.com or other stores. Our club bought a drum of the correct GL4 for members to use.

I have Mobil 1 ATF in both the auto trans and the transfer case.
