what oil filter do you guys use??sportin83 09-09-2005, 01:13 AM wanted to see what everyone uses on there truck? sportin83 09-09-2005, 01:18 AM at the moment i am using fram but will soon change when i change my oil in a week or so. Nigel215 09-09-2005, 08:04 AM I use fram, but thats just because thats wht the guy behind the counter gives me. I used Purolator once, but thats because i bought i somewhere else and thats what they gave me. Do they really make that much of a difference? jethro_3 09-09-2005, 09:23 AM 4 out of 5 leading doctors.... oops, that was 4 out of 5 scientists.... one more time.... I said 4 out of 5 mechanics said YES!!!! misfitt006 09-09-2005, 01:07 PM I use whatever filter the guys at Jiffy Lube install for me lol. I thought about asking this question the other day also. I know a lot of you hate on Fram a lot on here. What difference does the filter make really? jumpingjack66 09-09-2005, 01:24 PM i use Fram extra guard with mobile one and run the oil to about 6000 miles. Only because the worry facter gets to strong. What the latest bad news about fram? I have been gone awile...jj 74 laguna 09-09-2005, 02:05 PM I use a Napa Gold 1522, which is made by Wix and German Castrol oil and change it every 3,000 miles. jeep_cj4x4 09-09-2005, 03:32 PM Not to post rob but this follows with the what brand filter question.... Has anyone installed a larger filter than the stock one the guy behind the counter hands you? Does a larger filter FIT in the oilpan cavity? If so, what is the part #? Oh, I use WIX filters. Occasionally Purolator. L98Driver 09-09-2005, 04:51 PM FRAM ICK< FRAMS FRIGGEN #@S*%*&A@!, suck with the exception of the fram xtended guard filter, all of them use cardboard end caps, meaning that they can get soggy and distribute cardboard to your motor, leak bad oil back into the system, fail. Also people have noticed a lot of valvetrain nose with them. Purolator Pure One's are great in terms being able to filter, but they are just to dang restrictive in my opinion, the inside is practically a whole chunk of filter media. Basically anything but fram is good, also avoid quakerstate, and pennzoil oil filters because they are also fram extra guards. Wix, purolator premium plus, Carquest (these are made by wix), napa (these are also wixes), power flo (basically a purolator premium plus), Bosch Premium, K&N (Champ Labs), AC Delco Duraguard, Advance Auto Total Grip (Also a purolator premium plus), even the wal-mart supertech filter with e-core (made by champ labs also) is better than fram and only $2.07, Amsoil, Mobil 1 (champ labs, I LUV THESE, they are my favorite cuz they have a synthetic blend media, low torque gasket, silicon anti drainback valve that wont crack, thickest shell, metal end caps, etc, but they cost like around 10 bux), anyway just stay away from fram, i've known ppl who have had them fail. jeverett 09-09-2005, 06:06 PM Only WIX, and nothing else. I'd use K&N but can't find them anywhere. White Lightening 09-10-2005, 06:42 AM L98Driver, good summary. I use the Puralator One during the spring/summer months - for extra quality filteration. Then as colder temperatures come - I switch to the lower level Puralator Premium Plus filter. I've cut open a couple filters - and the Puraltors are nicely designed and built compared to some others (in a pinch the WalMart Supertechs aren't bad either). Like you - the Puralator One is a "bit much filter material" if there is cold related restriction possible - yet for me - summer driving could be the toughest on the engines (and pulling) so I figure more possibility for contaminants etc.. Been a good story so far the last number of years - so I'm sticking with it  ricebike 09-11-2005, 02:28 AM I use a Napa Gold 1522, which is made by Wix and German Castrol oil and change it every 3,000 miles. +1 on this topic... i just changed the oil/filter on bro's 2004 avalanche & that filter is small!!!!!!!for a V8!!!!!!! any1 can find a larger size capacity filter that can fit on original oil filter mounting flange, please let us in on the secret! thanks super tech filters are just as good as ACdelcos BlenderWizard 09-14-2005, 10:18 PM I don't even know where you can get a Wix filter... Nobody around here seems to carry them jeep_cj4x4 09-15-2005, 08:06 AM O'reilly's carry wix. Not sure where else. They are practically in my back yard so I usually go there. jdugan 09-16-2005, 10:04 PM Fram is the worst oil filter on the market by far. My friends and I cut some filters open just out of pure curiousity to see which one had the best filtration system and we all had a great laugh when we saw how bad the Frams were... but they do run a great advertising campaign! sportin83 09-16-2005, 10:21 PM O'reilly's carry wix. Not sure where else. They are practically in my back yard so I usually go there. i will have ti check out o'reilly's, they are popping up all over around here. they are like 3 or 4 within 30 miles of me. BlenderWizard 10-02-2005, 08:48 PM Oil filter review http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilterstudy.html It appears, according to the above review, that the Purolator Pure One is about the best filter available, due mainly to its synthetic media robjen 10-02-2005, 11:59 PM I bought my wix filter at a chapion auto parts yakk 10-03-2005, 10:34 PM Does anyone know who makes the Valvoline filters that the Valvoline Oil change stations use? LongIslander26 10-23-2005, 08:38 PM Fram is the worst oil filter on the market by far. My friends and I cut some filters open just out of pure curiousity to see which one had the best filtration system and we all had a great laugh when we saw how bad the Frams were... but they do run a great advertising campaign! I use NAPA GOLD filters, and they're made by WIX. I used K&N filters for awhile, but WIX has always tested as being just as good for alot less money. HanibalTheCannibal 10-23-2005, 11:11 PM I opted for Mobil1 Because of the synthetic fibers. Besides it matched my oil in the shopping basket :smokin: fleettech 10-25-2005, 07:33 PM this time i used fram extended guard on the truck and wifes car. usually use wix/napa gold cause we get a smokin deal on them at work(can get a napa gold cheaper than a fram at wally) also run CASTROL 10w30 in both. Rhymingmechanic 10-28-2005, 05:20 PM It's possible that what oil filter you use has nothing to do with how long your engine will last. That said, if you use Fram, you owe it to yourself to do some research. If you're obsessive enough about your truck to be reading about oil filters, you probably want a well-made product. At the very least, there are equal or better filters available for less money. Cut a Fram open and compare it to an AC Delco or a Wix, or even a Valucraft from Autozone. (A can opener will work at least once, but don't plan to use it on cans anymore.) Check out the Oil Filters forum on bobistheoilguy.com. A member named "lubeowner" has posted a lot of photos of Frams with tears through the media. I use AC Delco PF59 on my '01 5.3--that's the "long" filter, not the thimble-sized one. I cut the last one open after 7200 miles and it looked fine--the media, glue, and seams were all intact. To recap what somebody said earlier: Fram=Pennzoil. AC Delco, Bosch, Mobil 1, Super Tech (Wal-Mart), STP, K&N, and Valucraft (Autozone) are all made by the same company (Champion Labs), but there may be differences in things like the type and amount of filter media depending on the brand. Wix makes Napa and Carquest filters, at least the premium models. Purolator makes the Pepboys house brand, Quaker State and some Motorcraft filters. I think the Valvoline Maxlife filter is a Purolator, too. Like the Champion brands, there can be some differences. Pure One gets good marks for filtering ability and has a silicone antidrainback valve. I "think" Amsoil filters are Baldwins. BlenderWizard 10-28-2005, 09:04 PM no sale! MT-2500 10-28-2005, 09:22 PM If it is a GM keep it GM. Use AC-delco oil filters. For over 45 years I have saw people have oil pressure problems on start or running on the road when they use fram filters. I can not understand why they would even think about using them. Even if it saves a few cents it Does not make sense to me. MT-2500 Rhymingmechanic 10-29-2005, 02:31 PM Posted by BlenderWizard - 10-28-2005 at 05:04 PM "no sale!" Huh? Blue_Squid_03 12-27-2005, 06:21 PM I just installed a pure 1 from purolator and some royal purple 5w-30 in my '03. Going on a road trip soon, so i will see if gas mileage improves. Merry Christmas to ME!!! FiTxAg04 12-30-2005, 01:40 AM About 500 miles ago I switched from Castrol GTX 5w30 and a Fram Tough Guard filter to Mobil 1 5w30 with a Mobil 1 filter. Very pleased so far. The first thing I noticed was cold weather startups were much improved. Before the Mobil 1 if it was around 30 degrees or so the truck would labor to turn over... now, in the same cold it might as wll be 100 degrees outside, the motor starts up quick. I'm taking my truck on a 300 mile trip tomorrow so I plan on comparing gas milage to check for any difference. big_blue_chevy2006 01-04-2006, 07:23 AM well i havnt changed my oil since i bought my new truck, but i did use napa gold(wix) and 5 quarts of valvoline max life with a quart of lucas. i also had a high volume oil pump so i was told by a couple people to use a wix filter, it didnt leak which was great. speaking of oil a buddy of mine used shell rotella t in his 88 350 and he tore that apart last week, said it was VERY clean, no sludge buildup or anything, this motor was ran hard and had 150k miles on it, i have started thinking about using rotella t now, although it is kind of expensive AzSandSlinger 03-29-2006, 03:50 PM Puro's all the way... I wouldn't ever run a Fram, or any of the re-labeled ones (Pennzoil, Quaker State).. you'll see why below.. Opinions kill motors, do an analysis on your own: http://www.blackstone-labs.com I did an analysis on my oil after 5000mi. (which is my normal interval) on the following oil filters: Purolator Amsoil (I think this is actually a Baldwin filter) K&N Mobil 1 AC Delco Napa (Wix) I used Castrol GTX 10w-40 for all oil changes There was little difference between them. Every car/truck will be different according to driving style, climate, etc.. so my results will do nothing for you other than show you that they were all relatively equal under similiar conditions... I also did an analysis on a Fram after only 3000mi... It was incredibly worse than the others (at less mileage) and why I will never touch any vehicle of mine with another one.. -------------------- Some other tidbits: IIRC, SuperTechs were made from Champion Labs.. but I think they have since switched to also being re-labeled Frams.. I also used to use the Puro L20123 filter for my truck ('00 Sierra 5.3L). It was the same as the L25288 but longer. I since found out that they no longer make the L20123 filters.. There they sell a case (12) of oil filters of one size that is cheaper to buy than by buying them singly.
