I have an 01 Taurus, and there is a humming sound coming from the trunk area. Is the fuel pump inside the gas tank? The humming seems to be getting worse, if it is in the tank, anyone replace one before?
Thanks!

Explain when you hear the hum, while driving or while parked or while the engine running or off. A restricted fuel filter will sometimes cause the pump to be noisy and/or fail.
Fuel pump is inside the tank - thumb thru a Haynes/Chilton book for info on how to do a fuel pump replace.

It's noisy when the car is started and running. Should I go the filter route before replacing the pump? The car has 70k on the factory filter.

Fuel filters should be changed every 30K miles. Take a chance and change it.

I agree with the fuel filter change first, it needs to be done anyway so nothing lost. It's important to change it every 30k miles as stated previously. It's $45 to $50 to have dealer/garage do it.

If you can slip out and replace a couple of plastic clips, slip off and slide on rubber tubing, you can replace the filter yourself for the cost of the unit. Most auto parts stores carry them for 12 - $18.

All right I'll go the filter route first, Thanks!
