I have decided that I hate giving money to Oil Companies.

Since buying a new hybrid costs too much, I was considering getting a 92 to 95 civic and modifying it for fuel efficiency. I did a search on this forum but didn't find much.

First: for fuel efficiency I am assuming that anything that changes the fuel ratio or concentrates on high rpm power is not good. Also, anything that increases air flow through the low to mid rpm is good. Off the top of my head I'm thinking intake, intake manifold, 4-2-1 header, and exhaust, along with updating the plugs and wires.

Second: I have heard that the HX and possibly VX models are the most efficient in the EL years, but they are hard to find. How much more efficient are they? Enough to warrant extra searching time? Are the DX or EX models close enough that it won't matter in the long run?

hx>vx>dx>ex. i think the hx is more efficicent than the vx but ur not gona find a 92-95 HX model since they are 96-00 models. just get a vx and take some stuff that u dont need out of it and do a complete maintenace and u should be able to get a good 35-50mpg out of it. dont waste ur time on aftermarket parts mayb just a k&n drop in filter and u should be good.

I asume you mean the CVT one or is the older hydro 5spd have something differnt in it then the other 5spds?

The CX is a good model too, I do pretty well on mine (couldn't tell ya the exact mpg though).

Does anyone know for sure which HX years have transmission troubles? That's normally an expensive fix...

The CVT transmission was an option available on the 96-00 HX coupe.

HX coupes are available with a new continuously variable transmission.

The CVT transmission used in the Insight is very similar to the CVT transmission that Honda has used in other vehicles, including the Civic HX in the United States, and the Honda Logo in Europe & Japan. CVT equipped Civic HX models have been sold in the U.S. since 1996. The Insight and 2001 Civic HX use a redesigned and significantly improved version of the CVT transmission.

This above link also describes how the Honda CVT works. It also provides a like to discribe how the toyota version of the CVT (called ECVT) works, as they are mechanically different.

It was an option....a 5 speed was also available. You can see the CVT is listed under optional equipment.

Both the Insight and 96-00 Civic HX were made with the CVT. They both came with either a conventional 5-speed manual tranny OR the continuously variable automatic transmission, aka CVT transmission.

I hope this clears up some of the confusion over the HX and the CVT.

with my 94 DX 5 speed I've topped out at about 46-47MPG on a highway trip. i average about 40 overall though. I have done nothing to it. It has no power steering, i guess that helps slightly.

When my wife drives it she gets about 37 or 38. So the way you drive has a lot to do with it.

Our 93 DX automatic only gets about 33 or 34. "It is a dog on gas".
