Searched and want to make sure it's the igniton

Did the search and even though nothing seemed to be exactly like what I am having I think it may be the ignition switch. Just want to make sure before I spend $100 on one.

I have a 96 2 door. Randomly when I go to start it everything comes on normal on the dash and running lights and such. When the key is turned further though nothing happens under the hood. No clicking or anything. The fuel pump does engage and prime though. If I sit there and repeatedly turn the key it will eventually hit and start up.

If it is the ignition switch , how difficult is it to replace? I have done quite a bit to cars including a clutch on a SHO Taurus ( that was a pain ). Thanks guys, just want to make sure since I just had to dump about $400 in the AC in the past month. Don't feel like putting alot into it now that I don't have to.

I would be looking at your connections to your starter and battery.

OK I checked the connections and they are fine. Even cleaned them while I was at it. Still have the problem. I have noticed that it mainly happens when it is cool outside. Once it heats up in the afternoon it will pretty much fire right up.

Just a thought here, I'd guess a bad starter solenoid that may be letting moisture inside the housing (when engine warms up, mositure disappears, engine starts.) I had a similar problem with a solenoid that would freeze-up in the winter.

I had a similar problem with my 93. What I had to do was keep a tire iron within reach and when it would not turn over, all I had to do was crawl over the front passenger tire and give the solenoid a couple of sharp taps with the tire iron, then get back in the truck and try the key again, and it would start right up. I ultimately had to replace the starter/solenoid but when I did, I also installed a heat shield around the solenoid.

Ahhhh, the old tried and true method for waking up a nearly dead starter. I recommended this to a friend one time, when his truck wouldn't start. When it still wouldn't work, I went to his house to help him...only to find that he had been tapping on the alternator..... up until that point I had never realized that he was an idiot.

The key word in Rick's post is "tap", if you hit the starter too hard, you will crack the magnets and kill it.

Amen on the LIGHT taps, you don't need to kill the thing.

Working on getting it off now to have it tested. At the point now of trying to figure out how to get those wires off the front of it.

Did you try tapping on the Solenoid first?

So then, Are you trying to pull the wires off of the starter/solenoid to have it tested? Have you tried jumping the starter? Do you know how to jump the starter? If you jump the starter and it starts, it might mean your starter is o.k and your problem is else where.

I thought about that after I got Ii loose. By then I just commited to pulling it and taking it to get tested. Soon as my buddy gets here I will be headed up there to find out if it is. Did notice once it was off that it is a remanufactored Duralast , so it could very well be the problem.

Looks like it was the starter after all. Had it tested and the screen had fail all over it and flashed red. Sort of like my wallet did.
