The best way i found many years ago was to mix 3 pints of Black [dark Grey] primer with 1 pint of lacquer paint. The end result is a black satin finish. If you need a rust stopper try POR-15 Rust Preventive Paint. You can mix any lacquer with lacquer primer. I have tried a few colors. The only 2 I liked are Black and Red. To get the red I had to use a very dark maroon paint. Red and light Grey primer made pink. My wife loved it, I told her she could paint her bathroom with it, period, LOL.
