Oil presuremountie1982 09-02-2005, 05:24 AM My 97 blazers 4.3l v6 was just rebuilt about 5000km ago. I find that its going throught a s... load of oil and once in a while on a hevy acceleration there is smoke comming out of the exhust. THe oil presure is alway erratic as well. What do you think maybe the problem? I starting to think the rebuild didnt go as well as it should have. Maybe gaskets or something along those lines? I know the oil cooler lines are sweating a bit. I dont think enough to drop the oil like it is. The shop I had this done said that its normal for this to happen on a fresh rebuild it takes time for the gaskets to seat. They also told me that it was most likely That i had been 4x4ing or hot rodding and that they can check the computer. Is this true not that I have been driving it ruff but I dont want them to try to pull a fast one on me. Thanks mountie1982 09-02-2005, 05:25 AM and the check engine light is on too!!!!!!!! Got to love our blazers :) GMMerlin 09-02-2005, 06:32 AM A properly rebuilt engine should not smoke on excelleration (although a fresh engine could use about 2 qts in 3-6000 miles). Oil pressure will go up as the engine speeds up (and vice versa) Now, with having your engine rebuilt, there is the possibility of a ground being left loose and causing some electrical issues (erratic OP gage and SES light) I would check the code first. The shop is BSing you about them knowing what you were doing..the only thing they can tell is what the sensor parameters were at the point the code was set.now they can tell how far you were in the throttle and how fast you were going when the code was set. Rick Norwood 09-02-2005, 09:30 AM You need to take the truck back to them and scream bloody murder. You should not be going thru that much oil at all, and if the smoke coming out of the exhaust is white, you're obviously burning oil. This could be valves, valve guides, pistons, or piston rings. They obviously screwed up the rebuild Bar none. After 5000 km, everything should be seated in and you should be ready for your first oil change. Don't let them BS you! muzzy1maniac 09-02-2005, 09:41 AM White smoke = Coolant leak Blue Smoke = Oil leak Rick Norwood 09-02-2005, 09:44 AM White smoke = Coolant leak Blue Smoke = Oil leak I stand corrected. -Thanks But to the untrained eye, the blue smoke will appear to be white simply because it is not black. BlazerLT 09-02-2005, 07:43 PM How much oil is it going through? How is the oil pressure changing? Go to autozone and get the codes checked. mountie1982 09-03-2005, 05:56 PM I have to put 1 to 2 liters in every few days. The presure will be ok say at a light while at idle. Then its drops down to zero presure the check gauge light comes on. Then in a few seconds the presure jumps back up to being ok. the light goes out expect the engine light that been on since befoer the rebuild i was told it should clear itself in time but its been almost 5000km. It seems like the presure drops after it has be smoking most likey do to the oil being burnt. When i check the oil on the dip stick nothing shows. I read the post about the oil level maybe that could be part of the problem too. I cant take it back to the shop till wenesday. As far as taking it to autozone there are none here were i live (Langley BC Canada) thanks BlazerLT 09-04-2005, 01:06 AM Take you truck back to the rebuild shop, something is wrong for sure and don't let them bullshit you into thinking that this is normal. BlazerBoyLT98 09-04-2005, 03:52 AM If they tell you it is normal tell them you are calling a lawyer to sue them! if he laughs at you.... punch him the face and run for your life! Please Like BlazerLT said, do not let them bullshit you as this is so far from normal. It is not unusual for my blazer to eat a half to a ful quart after not changing the oil for about 6 or 7 thousand miles. Only time I notice my oil pressure rising high is also in the area of high miles between oil changes as the oil filter is getting plugged do to the mobil 1 (love that stuff!!!) cleaning my engine out. But in no way are your issues normal! GMMerlin 09-04-2005, 11:54 AM You probally have an incorrectly installed or missing oil control ring on a piston to cause that much oil usage. You definately need to take that vehicle back. Oil usage of 1 qt per 2000 miles on a freshly rebuilt engine is acceptable any more, time to start looking. BlazerLT 09-04-2005, 12:38 PM Yip, there is a warranty for this, and they have to stand behind it or the lawyer will come knocking. mountie1982 09-05-2005, 07:12 AM Thanks guys, I gonna take it back on Wednesday morning after work and with luck it will be taken care of. If not plan B the punch in the face. I am 6 foot 5 and 250 lbs so there should be enough motovation there for him to make things right. Plus Ill bring my bro he makes me look tiny.......lol I sure they will be more then willing to fix it. mountie1982 09-09-2005, 07:26 AM Well i took it back to the shop. They did an oil change not that it needed it as i did one daily with all that it was going thru. Well they said that one of the piston rings didnt seat. They fixed it and it seems to be ok for now. So with luck the oil problem is done. They checked the codes for the check engine light. They said that it was the o2 sensor before the cat. They said that this too could be the problem with the smoke and oil but most likely it was just the non seated rings. They said that its really easy to chance the sensor so they think I could do it myself instead of paying them a shit load of money to do it. I was reading the post about the sensor and i see thats there are 4 on the 97. Is it better to change them all or just the one they said was throwing the light? Whats the best brand to use and whats a good price to pay in canadian $$$$? Thanks you guys are the best lots of great help here. BlazerLT 09-09-2005, 01:04 PM Easy to replace, buy one at Canadian Tire, remove the old one, install the new one. To clear the computer you remove the negative battery terminal, turn the key to on and remove the two ecm fuses from the fuse panel. Then put the key to off and wait 30 minutes. Then reinsert the fuses, reattach the negative terminal. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
