Last year I took my 1993 RX-7 R1 in to Rotary Specialists in Denver for maintenance/inspection. The checked it out, recommended full service and a few other things (replace tie rod, motor mount, whatever they could get me on), and well, they got me. Told me everything else looked in good shape and the engine was strong. Naive me believes them and drives off to California...nearly $4000 poorer, but thinking the car should be good to go for a lot longer. Now, about 4000 miles later (over a quarter of which came from the drive from CO to CA), I have lost almost all power in the car. They claim I just had bad luck and they hold no responsibility. There's more to the story but basically now I am screwed. I have no money to fix it and have reluctantly decided to sell. If you want this car or know someone who might, please contact me.
It still looks good exterior and interior with only a few minor signs of it's age. The clutch had been replaced a couple years ago, but other than that, all major components are stock. I'd love to keep it, but need to sell it to make rent.

I will consider all reasonable offers.

This site and email address will only be live until Sept. 19.

Well they did not take you for whatever they could. They told you the problems and how to fix it and you said yes. You authorized the work, therfore all the money you "lost" was spent by you and you alone.

Second, there is no way to tell the life span of a motor. There are half a million variables in the equasion. They dont know how it was driven before, they dont know how you drove it. They dont see inside the motor.

You werent screwed, you bought a car that needed more work than you wanted to take on and now are disapointed with the results.

Dont blame a reputable company because your car decided to brake. Its not there fault.

Now that the rant is over, ill offer you $6000 for the body as the motor is crap.

There is a lot of merit in your response to my rant, so I'll concede that you may be right. The guys at that shop did seem to have a lot of rotary knowledge and I will hand it to them for having a lot of charisma.

You are right on the button when you said I am disappointed with the results—hugely.

As I said before the car is basically in good condition, exterior, interior, clean engine compartment, and though I haven't had an expert inspect it physically, I allow for the possibility that the engine may indeed be crap. Even with that being the case, I have had some very good offers, nonetheless. If none of those offers pan out, I will consider your bid. One way or another, I am looking to have it sold within the next couple of weeks.

Dang, I already miss it.

I appreciate your input and your offer.
Thanks.

Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention that upon showing the work invoice to a skilled and knowledgeable mechanic (not rotary expert, but still) I know, he looked up the parts listed on it in his computer database and found that I was charged on average a markup of 50% to 150% percent above retail on nearly every part/item on the list. I was too trusting and not educated enough in that area then to realize it. Or maybe they used the very best quality stuff? Live and learn though, right? Next time I will show more patience and shop around and do more research.

Okay, end of rant...maybe. ha ha

Mark up on parts is nothing new, most of the money is made in the sale of parts. IF they used OEM stuff its EXPENSIVE compared to jobber stuff. I use all OEM gaskets and such in my cars (except in certain situations, eg. tripple turbo 20B).

Im sorry if i come off sounding like an asshole, i just hear people complain to me about things like this all the time. It basicly comes down to, how old is the engine, how many kms on it. If you buy a rotary with an original motor and anything equivilent to 170,000kms on it, then you are looking to replace it soon, no matter what the compression numbers say or a tech tells you.

That is true, parts mark up is common, I just haven't been gouged so deeply before, and the car only has 82k (though aware it is common for these engine to give out around 70k miles or above, but you think it won't happen to you, right?), and I didn't drive it hard, and I took reasonably good care of it (not babied, but not abused), and meeting with the previous owner I came off with the impression he took good care of it also, and with the tech telling me the engine was strong and should last a long while still, and that it was driving basically just fine and then suddenly-phooey, well...it is a major disappointment—regardless of how much money has been spent on it. I didn't mind paying so much because I was getting a little security in it's longevity, or so I thought. As a fellow RX-7 owner, I am sure you understand the attachment one can associate with this vehichle. It is an easy one to grow fond of.

No worries, I didn't read into your responses as those of an asshole, you were just stating your opinion, no malice perceived. On the contrary, thanks for your input.

If you are looking for a motor for it i have one with around 11,000kms on it. Ran perfect when pulled. I personaly did all the port work and such with this motor so i know what went into it.

If your intrested let me know, we may be able to work something out and you coudl keep your car.

My email is in my original post. Hit me up there with your proposal and the specifics of that engine you are mentioning. If it ran perfect, why was it pulled? Crashed car? Anyway, no need to put those details in this post, so looking forward to your email, FDTT.
thanks.

...markup of 50% to 150% percent above retail on nearly every part/item on the list.

Wow, 50 to 150%, that too on retail!!! To say the least, that sounds excessive. I try to do what I can on my 7, but when I don't, I don't think I've been ripped off to this extent. If you decide to keep your 7, I'd invest in factory manuals from EBay or wherever. This will instantly make you know more about your car than 80% of the people out there who work on them. Hell, you already sunk all the money in it, why not have a go at making it work? Hope it isn't your primary means of transportation.

50% to 150% on retail sounds about right ... gotta think... who the heck else can work on a rotary ? not your average garage that's for sure. when you have a market cornered you better believe they're gonna try to make money
