Anyone buy a locking gas cap yet?BlenderWizard 08-31-2005, 04:55 PM Well, I just got home, and I saw that gas was $2.89/gal in some places, with cars wrapped around the block, and then I saw that gas was $3.89 a gallon right down the street, with even more cars wrapped around the block. I filled up yesterday for $2.59 a gallon, and have driven very little. Being the paranoid guy that I am, I stopped by Advance Auto Parts on the way home and bought a Stant locking gas cap for the Silverado. Anyone else have one or planning on getting one? Here's a link to an article that describes my local situation: http://www.wsbtv.com/money/4919369/detail.html chuck16 08-31-2005, 05:04 PM My Truck sits in the garage overnight so I'm not to worried about losing gas. Where I park at work is on Private property so there shouldn't be any gas theft here either. Get Bush to turn the Pumps on down there and bring out the reserve fuel.... Last I read (earlier this week), he was talking about tapping the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, but that's in LA, and I dunno if it got flooded out or not... chuck16 08-31-2005, 05:51 PM Sorry man to hear about the prices. Hopefully they will come back down again once the summer is over and somewhat normal production resumes.... BlenderWizard 08-31-2005, 09:14 PM Damn, I guess Atlanta is the only place that has seen gas jump like this today... I talked to my sister in Houston, everything's normal with gas there. I talked to my Mother in Law in Tampa, everything's normal with gas there. Today it is $2.91 in MN and premium in La Crosse WI is $3.04 and based on the gasoline futures market at present - next week we could see 30 to 50 cents added on to the numbers I just said. The sad part - is that so many people are ill informed about the situation. They think it is about oil. It isn't. Refineries can't make enough gasoline at this point. The stock pile of crude oil is good - but it is sour crude and needs alot of processing. Meanwhile refineries are running at 98% for 2 years steady - no stops - no breaks - no maintenance. And now - we have some refineries down because of Katrina with only 20 day gasoline stockpiles in our system. A SPR release from the East Coast - won't get us more gasoline. And if you think gasoline is expensive - wait till you see what Natrual gas prices will be this winter. Numerous NG rigs in the Gulf are off line for 4 months. NG on the commodity market was $9.50 on Friday and by Monday NG was $11.85 - and we aren't near the NG burning season yet. By the way - I got one of the Stant units late last Fall - because a 26 gallon tank full of fuel represents money at $2.00 a gallon - and represents food for the week for some people at $3.00 a gallon. One thing about those fuel caps by Stant - mine tends to loosen sometimes enough that the truck indicates "tighten gas cap". You have to make sure you turn it so that it clicks "several times". White Lightening sportin83 08-31-2005, 10:06 PM central IL just went up to 3.29 a gallon. sucks!!! White Lightening Even in surounding areas around Atlanta, gas is still in the mid $2 range. People in the metro Atlanta are are just being asswipes and pouring salt on an open wound by price gouging. The governor made an anouncement late this afternoon saying any station that is giulty of price gouging will be fined between $5,000 and $15,000 for each offense. The EPA sent out an announcement to gasoline producing oil refineries earlier, telling them to forget putting in all the environmentally friendly crap and turn out gasoline on the double. The news indicated this was a pretty big deal the SPR release was just to counter the oil pipeline that's offline due to no power. My stant said to click it 3 times to lock it... I guess anything less than that could have a tendency to get loose. abadassbowtie 08-31-2005, 10:14 PM was 2.57 yesterday and now is 3.09 in ohio BlenderWizard 08-31-2005, 10:22 PM Hehehe I like this: http://today.reuters.com/investing/financeArticle.aspx?type=bondsNews&storyID=URI:urn:newsml:reuters.com:20050901:MTFH23 428_2005-09-01_00-01-52_N31407956:1 HanibalTheCannibal 08-31-2005, 10:42 PM jumped $.40-.50 today!! Went up to $2.99 87octane today in Victoria TX. 40% of US oil production has been stopped from this thing. Its going to get worse. Dam right I am getting a locking gas cap. robjen 08-31-2005, 10:50 PM I watched the news and I can't believe the people in america. People with food and water are giving it away, while the gas and lumber companies are gouging the public for every dime they have. Isn't it funny how some industries are allowed to do such a thing. Instead of looting the houses, they should loot the gas stations. I saw one place that was charging over 6 a gallon. White Lightening Hey, is there any way to use the thether on the factory gas cap with the locking one? I pushed the little plastic pin out of the filler tube bracket from the back side, so I have what you might call my entire "gas cap assembly" in my toolbox. Anyway, it would be nice to be able to reuse the tether. Rollingbones 09-01-2005, 01:09 AM I bought one about three months ago. I wanted to get it before Gov. Schwartzenegger decides to come by my house and tries to siphon gas from my truck (just one of the many bennies of living in the Sacramento area)!!! jtfrog 09-01-2005, 04:25 AM Any type better than others? I inquired for our vans at work, and the dealer told me that all new cars have a screen at the bottom of the filler neck to prevent a hose from being pushed into the tank. He told me the only thing a locking cap will prevent is someone pouring a foreign substance into the tank. Rollingbones 09-01-2005, 10:39 AM I can appreciate wanting the teather on the cap. That part I plan to work out later. The locking cap I bought seems to be a pretty good one. It works by disengaging the cap from the plug and would be extremely difficult to remove (the cap will only spin loosly when locked). I dont know about the screen. Later today I'm going to try and put a skinny hose down there to see. The other thing is that like you said, you never know when some gas thief might get PO'd and want to put something in your tank!!! That's true, I hadn't thought of that nineball481 09-01-2005, 05:32 PM The spouts have anti-siphon screens in them. If somone wants it bad enough they will take it. All that needs to be done is loosen the spout from the tank underneath the truck. Or you could just drill a hole into the tank..... My personal favorite..... find a closed gas station and siphon gas out of the underground tanks..... In Indianapolis gas is $3.19 for regular..... Bastards BlenderWizard 09-01-2005, 05:37 PM Couldn't you just poke some kind of a rod down the tube to break the screen? Snowbrdr1122 09-01-2005, 09:59 PM I tried to find a locking cap today for my 2005, which i guess has a new style non-threading cap and had to be special ordered. I'm in La Crosse, WI and currently regualr is right about $3.00 and premium is $3.45. It was acutaly in the news last week, thieves had the audacity to siphon gas from a truck parked on MAIN STREET! I dont know how secure it realy is but I think if someone was trying to get in there it wouldnt be a quiet job, and then my dogs would hear it and go crazy. I've been trying to get one for a while with no luck.... :shakehead Would you have a GM part #? Rollingbones 09-02-2005, 11:19 AM I got mine @ Kragen Auto Parts. A lot of places have them. I like this one because if anyone tries to mess with it they'll have a very difficult time. The cap itself disengages and will only spin loosly when "locked". Also, you cando a google search and find a good cap on linew. Suprteck 09-02-2005, 11:37 AM I've been trying to get one for a while with no luck.... :shakehead Would you have a GM part #? They didnt have a cap for the 05's so they sold me the 04 locking cap and it works perfectly. part number 12497880 No problems at all , no vacuum leaks or anything. It fits perfect. Ive had it on the truck for about 3 months and 4500 miles robjen 09-02-2005, 03:18 PM La Crosse, Thats where I am living too. Do you rememberwhat brand you have? JCL82 09-02-2005, 10:22 PM Some type of wal-mart crap.I went to 4wheelers(sells all type of stuff for trucks) and They had door locking gas covers(you know the swing door) they lock. But they wanted like 180 bucks for them,That's the only reason I didn't buy one yet. ricebike 09-03-2005, 03:23 AM did any1 even test to see if a hose would go past that restriction plate in the filler tube? when I've tried to drain out stale gas out of a suzuki sidekick/geo tracker...the siphon hose would stop at a certain point & won't go into the tank. I eventually had to pull a hose from the fuel filter & jump the fuel pump to drain it out that way... so, in some models, there's a restrictor screen somewhere in the fill tube... locking gas cap won't be needed for these type of vehicles. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
