'91 Si = rear DRUM brakes???

I've had my Si for 10 years now and the only thing that ever bothered me was a lack of rear disc brakes... whether it was perceived lack of performance or mainly PAIN-IN-DA-BUTT shoe replacements!

Then lately, while browsing various 4G sites, I read that Si's HAD rear discs. What the HECK?! Why is mine drummed? Did they run out of parts at the factory? What am I missing here?

The CRX Si had rear disk brakes and the Hatch Si had drums, but I'm not from the US so I'm not 100% sure. (99%) :)

Are you talkin about the 4th gen civic si? Well ALL of them have rear discs. I thought the 90-91 had rear discs just like the 90-91 crx si, but it doesn't .

1988-1991 4th gen civics si - all rear drums
1988- 1989 2nd gen crx si - all rear drums
1990-1991 2nd gen crx si - rear discs

I've got a 90 Si hatch, no rear discs. Only the CRX's.

The rear disc brakes from the CRS Si can be swapped into a hatch pretty easily. I haven't done this mod though.

Also, rear disc brakes from a 90-93 integra will swap in too...

Check the how-to page on 4thgenerationcivic.com for the instructions.

the teg rear disc setup is an easy mod. plus when my rears need brakes, its a 10 minute job, just like the front :D

Hey did you feel any stoping difference with that set up? I'm thinkin about getting me a gsr front brake conversion. Is it easy to do?

a little, not a lot though. i mainly did it for the ease of replacing the pads/looks better, and the fact my cylinder inside my old drum ruptured, causing all my brake fluid to drain out all of a sudden, and me almost rear ending another car cause i couldnt stop.
its pretty easy....broke one of the bolts in the process though. the biggest pain in the ass getting those ebrake cables routed and through that damn rubber grommet that goes into the cabin.

Yeh i'm still deciding on which way to go. I just posted up a new thread about the type r conversion. hhmmm type r or gsr?

I think you want the GSR conversion, because the TypeR has 5-lugs...at least on the 94-01 Tegs...

Swapping the e-brake cables is a massive pain. Worse than anything else I've done on my car. I had to drop the fuel tank partway to get enough clearance.

Rear brake swap is definitely worth it in the long run, though. Provides a little extra stopping power, makes changing the pads a lot easier, and it looks a hell of a lot better.

I should post the picture of the crap that still needs to go on my car, all sitting on a pallet in my garage. It includes full rear knees from a 90-93 teg, a new front fender, full big brake kit from fastbrakes.com, lower rear and front strut bars, and my flat black rota slipstreams. That stuff isnt getting done til the swap is running 100%.
