1997 Lumina Water Pump Replacement1997Lumina14 08-30-2005, 12:58 PM Water pump is in the process of going out on me. Going to buy one tonight and put it in, as my neighborrhood mechanic said it is pretty easy. Is it that easy? He said 45 minutes, so I give myself 1.5 hours. Any secrets or things to watch for would be helpfull. richtazz 08-31-2005, 12:00 PM Replacing the water pump is a matter of taking off the serp belt, removing the 4 pulley bolts and 5 water pump to timing cover bolts and cleaning the mounting surface of the old gasket material. The only issue is bleeding the cooling system. Make sure you have a repair manual so that you don't end up blowing a head gasket due to an air pocket getting trapped in the upper end of the engine. 1997Lumina14 08-31-2005, 12:08 PM It went very well... I started at 4:00 and was done by 6:00. The only issue I had was getting the belt back on, but a little muscle and it worked just fine. Did nothing to bleed the cooling system (unless I did it without knowing). Ran the car for 10 minutes two different times and checked fluid and filled if it needed it. Drove it to work this morning and everything seemed fine (it even started better then normal). Will check fluid before I leave for home. I figured two hours was not bad for an accountant who had besides changed brakes two times, nothing else "major" to a car. Thanks for the directions, I will remember the website next time I have to do something. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
