After having my car sit for the last couple of years, I've decided/started to work on it slowly. Many things are is store for this car, and right now I am researching and what not. What I am looking for is some help for some 2" drop spindles. It's an 80 2 door. Some people have said that S-10 spindles might work. I was wondering if spindles from a malibu/cutlass/monte would work. I prefere to lower it "the right way" as opposed to just cutting the coils or heating them. Although I might get them compressed an 1". I'm not building some ghetto pimp lowrider here. Its going to be a daily driver and am wanting to make it perform and handle better. It had some body roll before, so hopefully lowering it will help a little. Thanks

YOur best and cheapest bet is to go one of the Impala SS sites and find a set of stock SS springs. They will lower the car about that much, cost virtually nothing and improve the handling of your car.

Thanks for that info. I know I remember seeing an add for drop spindles before in a mini truck mag that someone had at school before. Too bad that was about 4 years ago, and I can't find the website for that company. Still searching....

The springs you get have to match up exactly with what you already have. Meaning that the diameter and where the coils ends are located have to be right on. The top of the spring might be flat, but the lower most coil has an orientation with the lower control arm.

I would look at getting the correct year cop or taxi springs and cut them down to what you want. I cut the spring with a torch but drop it into a spackle bucket of water with just what you want chopped off above the water line. That way the temper of the spring is not compromised. You can cut it with an abrasive disk too.

A tip for getting the springs out, dropping the lower ball joint won't work, you don't get enough swing with the arm to get the spring out. I had to drop mine on my wagon from the two pivot bolts at the cross member.

CD Smalley - Looks like you are pretty knowledgeable with suspension for these cars, from what I can see in other topics. If I don't end up finding some spindles to work for me, looks like I will get different springs. I'm looking for a 2" drop for both looks/performane. I'm not willing to sacrifice performance over looks though. I was looking and eibach makes a 1.2" front and 1" rear drop springs for the 94-96 Impala SS. Do you think that would give good performance? Thanks

Yes. But realize just how much that will drop your car. The stock SS spring will drop your car 1.5" or more. Add the drop that the eibach lowering springs for an SS give into the equation and you will end up with a 2+ inch drop on your car.

Does someone like Belltech make drop spindles for the ImpSS? If they do, those would work for your application as well.

Remember the suspension for 77-90 Caprices is virtually unchanged from the 91-96 cars. Almost everything will interchange....

Yes they do, BEL-2105 is supposed to be for the newer Impalas/Caprices. At $300 for the pair, I would need to know for sure that they will fit. truckn-store also has some as well both for Caprices/Impalas, different part numbers but probably same part. Theirs are $188.00 It almost seems like I would need to compare them side by side before hand. Sounds like I might have to go to the auto wreckers and take some different cars apart. Hopefully thats something they wouldn't care if I did.

I'd recommend Bell tech over the others. You get what you pay for.

the thing you need to be concerned with as far as fitment goes is the lower ball joint size. Sometime in late '95 they changed to a larger lower ball joint. If they offer two different models you want the smaller of the two. Call Bell Tech's tech line. I'm sure they can provide you the details.

You might also want to check some of the ImpSS places like NAISSO, and ImpalaSS forums etc...

If the ball joints are different, or tie rod ends for that matter, thats ok with me. That type of thing is expected when trying to do things to a car like this. Thats what is going to make it more unique then the cutlass's/malibus around here.

Thanks. Just a quick background as to what has been done to this car. Pulled the 267/TH350, replaced with 350 (30 over), TH400, custom cross member to allow for dual 2.5" exhaust with raven mufflers, tinted windows, had just re-done the brakes before parking it, lots of little things here and there. Had 15x8 American Racing rims, with 245/60 rubber but I sold them as I plan on getting some 17's. Torque Thrust II's are very appealing. I also want to put in a 5 speed, and change the rearend. Looks like the L99 had 3.23's, limited slip and disk brakes. I want to keep the same bolt pattern on the car without using adapters. So might just change the internals and stick with the drum brakes out back. I'm still debating if I should pull the body off the frame and take it into work and powder coat it. I want to, but not sure if it will be worth the hassle. So many plans for it, just need to start somewhere.
